EEOC: SD woman fired from job because of cancer

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission filed a lawsuit Friday against a nonprofit organization in Aberdeen saying it fired a worker because she had cancer.

According to the complaint filed in U.S. District Court for the District of South Dakota, the Area IV Senior Citizens Planning Council, Inc. terminated Eileen Job in 2008 when she tried to return to work after surgery for colon cancer.

Job was a kitchen assistant at the organization's Bowdle, S.D., location.

EEOC says Area IV fired Job because of possible symptoms that could result from her course of chemotherapy treatments.

yet, either - they should have carried her with extended sick leave or found her a different position.

You don't want someone with a compromised immune system working as a kitchen assistant - WAY too many dangerous pathogens, particularly with uncooked meat, in a kitchen.
