AARP: Congress Must Prevent Harmful Cuts to Social Security and Medicare

Congress Must Prevent Harmful Cuts to Social Security and Medicare

Video at link.

by: Government Affairs & Campaigns | from: AARP | Updated: July 12, 2011

Right now, President Obama and Congress are considering a deal to pay the nation's bills that could cut the Social Security and Medicare benefits seniors have earned through a lifetime of hard work.

Join us in the fight to keep Medicare and Social Security strong.

One proposal would cut the Social Security cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) — a change that would cost seniors thousands of dollars over their lifetimes.

According to the president's fiscal commission, changing the way the COLA is calculated would cut benefits by $112 billion over 10 years. Because the cut would compound every year, it would be felt the most by the oldest and sickest seniors when they've gone through much of their retirement savings.

The President and Congress are considering cuts to Medicare benefits, which would shift thousands of dollars in additional health care costs onto seniors. Proposals could include raising co-pays on things like home health care and raising premiums and cost-sharing for some beneficiaries.

2. Good to know some cuts/type of cuts to social security and Medicare would not be
harmful to millions: how quaint, how ludicrous, how disingenuous to suggest that even the slightest cuts wouldn't especially hurt the most vulnerable. :patriot:

4. "Cuts to Social Security and Medicare will only affect 55 and under"
My Republican, Faux News zombie husband who is almost 63. Big fight over this. "Well, YOUR Obama is causing this." Me. "No, YOUR George Bush caused it with Warren Buffet tax cuts." On, and on. It's hopeless with them. Hello, darling, if you think I will EVER vote for a Backman or Palin, you got another guess coming. I will STAY HOME, and not vote for the first time in over 40 years.

You cannot rationalize with zombies.

6. Lots of people "loved" that drug bill, particularly those who couldn't afford to buy them.

Should have been a lot tougher on negotiating with pharmaceutical companies. But, I think that will be part of the "cuts" proposed in these new laws/negotiations. The "dough nut hole" is an issue, but still worth it if that was the only way to get some prescription drug coverage.

7. AARP is Indeed Hypocritical
They should have had seniors up in arms over the Ryan plan but their response was far too muted. IF they had attacked it vigorously and pointed the blame squarely where it belonged the republicans would have taken a harder hit for the idiotic plan. For them to rear their ugly head now is highly suspect. If they were true in their advocacy of issues that matter to seniors there is no way that democrats would continue to lose this vital constituency. Dem fight for what's important to this group and they still vote republican in overwhelming numbers. You get to the point you just want to throw up your hands.
