Good morning, Sarah Palin. Welcome to the first day of the rest of your life.
Edited on Mon Jan-10-11 12:11 PM by Amerigo Vespucci
Dear Ms. Palin,

Good morning! It was quite an eventful weekend, wasn't it? I know your staff has certainly been busy, between the touching call for prayer that the person who writes your Facebook page posted to the abrupt removal of your "Take Back The 20" Website. I've been thinking about what your aide said, about how those crosshairs on the map really weren't gun sights at all but more like the innocent symbols you'd find on a surveyor's map. After much thought, I now agree with her, because you, Ms. Palin, are a surveyor yourself.

During the 2008 elections, you were a surveyor of the American landscape. You saw what the rest of us saw...a country bruised and battered by eight years of bad policy, by a president who lied to bring us onto war for the purpose of, among other things, seeking revenge upon the man who tried to "hurt his daddy," by a vice president who reaped enormous financial reward through the spilled blood of countless American military personnel while sounding the clarion call for more war, more killing, more aggression...a man with five successful attempts at avoiding military service when it was his turn to do his duty.

You're a woman, and you could have been a remarkable role model for millions of little girls, teenagers and adults across the country and the world. You could have positioned yourself as an agent of change, as someone who would restore the honor and dignity to the working men and women of this country who suffered as our former president rewarded his "base" at their expense.

Instead, you did something none of us expected. You approached the glowing, orange embers that lay smoldering at the rubble heap that once was a proud and prosperous America and you slowly fanned the flames. The anger, the uncertainty, the shattered lives...with the precision of a laser surgeon, you focused on that anger and encouraged people to become more angy, to become "Tea Party Patriots," to "reload, not retreat," to take up arms in revolt of an unseen enemy that they didn't understand, and neither did you.

As "Pogo" creator Walt Kelly once famously wrote, in the events of this past weekend, we have once again been given the opportunity to meet the enemy.

And he still is us.

It's not you. You're an adult, you can make adult decisions regarding your own life. You can abandon your position as an elected official to do commentary on Fox News, hire people to write books for you, go on lucrative public speaking tours, partner with Fox News personalities to stage rallies that further fan the aforementioned flames.

But you're still not the enemy.

We are, for giving you a platform. We are, for...just like a single cancer cell can multiply and spread its way through healthy tissue and destroy a life, you've spread your negative influence throughout a country in pain...you've weakened the body, you've crushed its vitality and warmth and loving spirit.

It's not your fault for doing it.

It's America's fault for willingly and consistently giving you a platform, for encouraging you, for enabling you.

Like the scorpion said to the frog, "I'm a scorpion. I sting things."

But enough on that subject. I have someone I'd like you to meet. Her name is Christina-Taylor Green.

She was nine years old. She went to Safeway this past weekend to meet Gabrielle Giffords and learn about politics.

She learned.

She was a nine year old girl, and unlike many of her peers, she'd already looked ahead to a point in her life where she would build a career upon helping others.

Not helping them by appearing on news entertainment shows. Not helping them by having her name appear on books written by others. Not helping them by making herself the star of a weekly TV reality show. Not helping them by seeking elected office and abandoning her commitment in mid-stream to satisfy her ego and seek financial gain. Not helping them by manipulating their weakness, by turning them into a host body for her rapidly multiplying brood.

She wanted to help people.

Can you see the difference?

Ms. Plain, this is a new morning. Christina no longer has the freedom to make choices in her life.

You do. Starting right now.

You can stop all of the nonsense right now. You can stop yelling into microphones and asking people if they love their freedom. You can drop the word salads and catch phrases about lame stream media. You can stop the violent rhetoric and military jargon and be exactly what this beautiful little child wanted to be.

You can be a force for good in this world.

You can be a force for positive change.

Or you can do nothing. You can blame everyone but yourself for the fact that fingers are now pointed in your direction in the wake of this tragedy.

And make no mistake, Ms. Palin, you are responsible for fanning those flames. You, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Bill O'Reilly, Glenn Beck. You all played a part in bringing our country to the point where anger equals profit, and the more anger, the more profit, so we are angry all the time.

Good morning, Sarah Palin. Welcome to the first day of the rest of your political life, as well as your life outside of politics.

How do you plan to spend it?

Mike

27. Patriotic irony
I think if you add Christina-Taylor Greeen who was born on the tragic day of 9/11/2001 made her even more of a patriotic hero than any "Maverick" identified by Sarah Palin.
Sarah's repeated denials about the cross-hairs reaffirms my belief she is an outright liar thereby causing the proverbial black eye to the GOP. It's time for the GOP to correct her for her inappropriate actions.

51. They won't do that, but they will step back if they see her as poison
Unfortunately, the sole topic on right-wing radio today was defending her, so she's going to have to be in a mess much worse than this before the GOP takes a stand against her.

erase it.

5. At least some measure of truth will get out there while she does.
It is really sad...while I was in church this past weekend the pastor had a bit in his sermon about Alfred Nobel's "epiphany," how he went from the man who created things that killed people to the man who created the Nobel Prize.

Palin could do the same, in her own way. I don't believe she will. But she could.

I'm not a psychologist or psychiatrist, so perhaps I'm not qualified to pass judgment. But I am an empathetic human being, and I detect a troubling similarity in the cold-blooded, selfish behavior of both Palin and Bush.

4. Beautiful in more ways than one

had big dreams, wanted to help those less fortunate than her and loved animals.

She sounded like the perfect example of the type of person to put this house (the planet) back in order.

May she rest in peace. I am not religious, but it's times like these I can see why people cling to their religion in an attempt to make sense of why someone like this could be taken like this.

Though if she did, I strongly suspect it wouldn't make a difference.

Still ... fix a couple of typos and send it out to the newspapers as an editorial. It may not reach its intended recipient, but it can reach others.

16. And I respect your opinion, but...
...I made that statement from the standpoint of the story about the frog and the scorpion. We all act upon our noble or base instincts. As rational beings, we can acknowledge those instincts and make a deliberate choice to change, to either swing the pendulum from good to evil or evil to good.

I believe the person Sarah Palin is right now is the person she became over the course of her life. I don;t believe she sat down one day and said "I am going to be destructive and evil for profit."

But she can look at where all this has taken her and make a change, right now.

I didn't mean to imply that she is without blame and not at fault.

I meant to imply that she is simply a scorpion, being a scorpion, and that her accountability in this moment equals the degree to which she will do these things deliberately in the future.

47. Like how is she using this horrible event to teach her own children right from wrong?
Children learn a great deal from parent's behavior and although a certain number of kids will become exact opposites of their parents, some are destined to carry on destructive traits they've been exposed to.

I know that on one level it's like talking to the wall, but what of there were some small portion inside of her waiting for redemption...instead, she'll probably continue to lay low for a while and come back worse than ever, initially playing the martyr card, then going on attack. That's her pattern, and I don't imagine she'll break it anytime soon.

...I'm thinking she probably had a small heart attack when her name got attached to the story, but we'll ALL know how this affected her (or didn't) in the days ahead. If she goes right back on script with that "hopey-changey" crap we'll know that she only laid low to avoid media scrutiny.

Everybody deserves a chance at redemption. Palin may not be ready for hers. She may never be ready.

55. I sincerely doubt Palin's handlers--including her Svengali husband--will allow her to truly digest
the enormity of the situation. The Palin family will find some way to refocus public attention in a more "flattering" manner. You know, maneuver another child into reality television, or co-opt a special needs child for photo ops, or try and find another network to facilitate their wholesale, faux-folksy bullshit.

McCain: Shooting a 'terrible, terrible' tragedy

-- Arizona Sen. John McCain is calling the shooting involving U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords a terrible tragedy that has shocked the nation.

McCain, who is in Cartagena, Colombia, meeting with Colombian's president, Juan Manuel Santos, said Saturday:

"I'm deeply saddened and shocked at the tragedy that has taken place in my home state of Arizona. The shooting of Congresswoman Giffords and the deaths of other individuals is a terrible tragedy and one that has shocked me and our nation.

The Republican says that his "prayers are with congresswoman's husband Mark and her entire family and the families of the other victims of this terrible, terrible tragedy."

She is a sociopath, and never to be trusted. EVER.

65. This event is going to put a kink in Karl Rove's plans for a strong Jeb Bush
come back for the Republican party. Karl was counting on Jeb riding in on his white horse to save the Republican party from the waco TeaParty. Now Palin has put her foot in it, Karl will have to reconsider.

68. Great post!
It really doesn't matter what Jared's political views are (and they seem to be all over the place). Here's what matters. he wasn't satisfied with government and the message was out there to him kill someone who didn't live up to his expectations, no matter if they're red, blue, shades of pink, green or orange. The second amendment solution has been suggested time and again for anyone who isn't satisfied with their government.

My caveat is that this message has been promulgated 99.9% of the time from the right. I guess what I'm saying, even lefties who are mentally ill or immature, can be stirred up by Palin, Angle, Beck, Limbaugh, etc., to go out and kill.

70. Thoroughly exposed
for the fraud she is and always has been, I think Palin's cowardice has come full circle. Yes, she'll retreat for awhile, then gradually ease back into the public eye. She'll get her appearances on friendly TV venus, but it'll never be the same. She's tainted. Who knows - she may be fearful for her own life and not make any public appearances in the near future. For sure, she's looking a lot of BOOs if she does.

K&R

she is constantly reminded that another little girl named, Christina will not have the opportunity to enjoy and experience another day, another milestone of life because of her and those who believe that the barrel of a gun an acceptable means of change.

74. She already passed on her opportunity.
It's too late already. It's now three days past and still nothing from the morons from Wasilla.
Clearly, she's the one who is sizing this tragedy up for political gain. She has no doubt been advised by her trainers to lay back until the time is right for whatever BS statement they can concoct for her.
She has the opportunity to immediately express her outrage and sympathy - she did not.
I do not believe that she intentionally directed this horror - that's too far a stretch for the peculiar type of idiot that she is.
But ignorance is no excuse as any policeman will tell you: her actions led to this and now she owns it.

Let her be gone - out of the MS finally and irrevocably. Let her and her band of fools bang around Arizona, Alaska, wherever; raising not a sound past the otherwise empty barrel surrounding them.

75. Palin is an entirely negative influence on America.
In over two years of putting up with this fluffy dipshit, I have never ONCE heard her offer any plan, any policy, any vision, any idea, that would actually HELP America and its citizens. No, all I hear from this glittery piece of crap is whining and screeching in that horrific voice from Hell about how mean to her the "lame stream media" is. She is a self-serving, shrieking idiot.

Palin lionizes people who are failures as Americans, as Christians, and as humans. She criticizes and threatens anyone who has the best interests of all Americans at heart. She commands a ragtag band of mentally challenged, Bible-besotted gun nuts who are as ignorant of America and its history as she is.

John McCain, may you rot in Hell for eternity for inflicting this menace on the country you claim to "love".

76. Rather than seeing a 'reformed Sarah' ...
... I wish she'd just STFU and go the hell away.

She's got enough money. She had an elected office. She had her 15 minutes in the spotlight.
Now go buy an island somewhere and leave the rest of us alone.

78. The only problem is that with someone like Palin, there is never "enough"...
...she's going to ride the gravy train as long as she possibly can.

No matter how pig-headed and stubborn she is about being "right" and getting the last word in, she knows there is no way to possibly win by shooting off her yap this week.

Once the stories drop off the front page, she'll be back.

And if you'll recall, we were seeing a flood of "Palin can't win" and "GOP becoming disenchanted with Palin's chances in 2012" stories right before the tragedy happened.

I don't think her standing will be improved by this, but I also don't think it will be sufficient to send her packing. She's the ultimate narcissist, the beauty queen also-ran with a considerable amount of baggage and issues. She can't go away...the spotlight is her crack pipe.

81. Beautifu post, but lost on those you address
Sarah doesn't give a rat's ass about doing good in the world. She only cares about herself - her money, her fame and her attention.

When the hoo-ha settles down in a week or two, the rhetoric and ranting will return to its former level. AZ 1070 will be the law of the state, Jan Brewer wil still gloat as the transplant patients die, the gun lobby will get a s*it bag of donations to save 2nd amendment rights, and the bagger media will make a successful campaign of being made scapegoats of liberals.

89. Instead of crosshairs, ?now She is Sarah *
This is Sarah's new symbol. *

It is the asterisk that marks this moment. Read the footnote of history. Sarah's credibility ended with this shooting. Sarah the asterisk was revealed as someone lacking judicious thought. Not that anyone is surprised that someone who attends 7 colleges to get an undergrad degree is lacking critical thinking skills. She may not have contributed to the actual shooting in anyway. Bu the violent rhetoric and the amazingly stupid map are rendered telling by the work of a mad man. They may be coincidence, but they are serendipitous if only that they are both so wrong headed. In this case, someone who uses these symbols has proven herself unfit for leadership.

I recommend we make a map just like Sarah's. Let's mark every republican who has not condemned violence, and every person who defends their actions with the asterisks as they add themselves to the dust bin of history, soon to be forgotten. The political ads against these people in the upcoming elections are so simple, they write themselves.

Asterisks for all of them. Enjoy the footnotes baby, there are increasingly fewer headlines for you now.

The issue IMO is mentally ill people having access to firearms. Until there is a real connection made between the killer and Palin, I'm not willing to connect the two. Lets wait until all the facts are in.
