Breivik listened to Lord of the Rings music on his iPod to drown out screams of his victims
snip

Survivors described Breivik as ‘wearing a headset’ as he calmly fired on his unarmed targets. The explanation is given in his 1,500-page ‘manifesto’, published on Friday hours before his killing spree.

In it he praises Lux Aeterna, by the British film composer Clint Mansell, formerly of the group Pop Will Eat Itself, and says he plans to use it in the atrocity.

He writes: ‘I will put my iPod on max volume as a tool to suppress fear if needed. I might just put Lux Aeterna by Clint Mansell on repeat as it is an incredibly powerful song.....‘very inspiring and invokes the type of passionate rage within you’.

One reason I so hated that movie was the music score as it was as militaristic as the movie - something which I felt was absolutley contary to Tolkien's vision.

1. In grad school I wrote quite a bit about Tolkien's hatred of the "utter stupid waste of war"
especially as this related to his views about WWI, in which he lost two of his three best friends. He never recovered from the loss. Tolkien's approach to war in LotR is extremely nuanced and deeply melancholy (very bitter, very sad) -- not the simplistic rah-rah action film approach of the Jackson films (particularly The Two Towers). There were a number of large changes in the adaptation from text to film.

Tolkien wrote in his letters that he loathed "the utter stupid waste of war" -- war's violent destruction of the natural world as well as its corruption of (as he viewed it) man's soul.

That this creep is in any way associated with Tolkien -- who was a shy, brilliant, thoughtful, passionate (his love for his wife Edith lasted decades), deeply introspective, philosophical, and rather haunted man (the loss of his mother and his two best friends in the Great War haunted him for the rest of his life) -- disgusts me.
