What Is DU?

It's hard to put into words, but I'll try. It's a place where I like to go to find current (unfiltered) news. It's also a place to share ideas with a community, and receive honest responses. It's a place to share life's struggles and successes with other Democrats and Progressives. It's a place to have fun and be goofy (at times). It's like a family. What is DU to you?

1. Its a place to come and talk to your friends, gang up on freepers/republicans and fight each other

over democratic decisions. You can also get some great advice and find someone who knows how to do just about anything and is willing to talk you through it.

4. From one "newbie" to another.....

I joined DU for a place to read current (unfiltered) news and especially the comments that follow; there are always some folks that can separate the "mainstream" BS and propaganda from what is actually happening and that is what makes DU valuable to me.

Even a "newbie" such as myself can quickly find the folks who seem to know be knowledgeable and intelligent on current events.

The camaraderie is nice, too.

by which we measure our pain. ..... Obviously, I'm listening to Lennon this morning.

DU is intended to be a discussion site for liberal and progressive Democrats. It welcomes many others .... including moderate and conservative Democrats, and those on the Democratic Left.

It is a resource for exploring ideas; for systems dems to attempt to shape perception; novocaine to keep people's senses dulled; and many, many other things.

It remains my favorite internet site.

8. DU is a place to discuss, learn and argue

and every day it has a healthy does of all three. :)

Many days I come here and spend time at the latest news area to read about whats going on. If I'm feeling chatty I go to the wild west areas of the site-general discussion and even more so-GD Presidency.

As election day gets closer I find myself spending more and more time on this site relative to other ones. I never frequent other progressive sites either. Its politico, here and huffington post for 90% of my net politics.

I have learned many things here and will enjoy coming here for many years to come.

9. DU is also an alternative universe where reality does not apply.

A place where DUers may issue statements and directives that I would hope in reality they know will never happen, but the DU alternative universe is the perfect place to escape reality and indulge in political fantasies.

This is the Democratic Underground and so it basically represents the views of Democrats but it does tend to lean heavily toward the Liberal/Progressive wing of the Democratic Party. As such it does not represent the majority of the viewpoints of most Americans or the American electorate as badly as we like to pretend that most people are like us and believe as we do.

To me DU is a message board/discussion board that is largely a refuge for Democrats can express their ideas and viewpoints and only be attacked for having those ideas by other Democrats rather than freepers or Republicans.

I know there are those who look upon DU as a family or a community, but it's not that for me. That's just me, how I feel. For me DU is a message/discussion board where I can read and post and be free from the cesspool of rightwing crap that I have to endure other places.

people? I would disagree. Judging from the polls, DU represents a MAJORITY of the people. Unfortunately, NOT a majority of Congress, the Courts, or even the Executive and ESPECIALLY not of the wealthy exploiting class. But the people? Yeah, I'd say DU reps them pretty well on most ISSUES.
