3. Your argument is with Google, not me.
Edited on Wed Jul-20-11 11:36 PM by Farting Walrus Bob
Google labels them news stories. I don't. And Google gauges the ranking by the number of Google news searches for each item.

I only see two or three true news items there. However, it shows that people consider news about Captain America more important than, say, the debt ceiling problem right now.

Google > News > look at the top left-hand corner.

Love the implication that I'm for some reason lying about this. LOL.

If you hang out here you will see that screen shots are rarely used, not viewed as credible, more work than their worth therefore not trusted. Who would take a screen capture, crop it in a photo editor, upload it to a server, then link to the server when in 5 seconds the URL of the source can be posted. See, it just doesn't make sense.

21. However, most people know that it takes two seconds for even a...
third grader to get to the google news page.

So asking for a link either shows that you were trying to pin me down, or that you have zero aptitude on how to navigate the internet.

Link has been provided, ergo you should be satisfied.

30. Oh man, the Bob just can't catch a break!
I was kinda taken aback by the convo above.

I know that good people are here. I've been reading here for a couple of years, but never joined. Right now I'm recuperating from a bad bad sunburn, so I had time to join... and then I read the story about the guy whose gay cousin was snubbed by his aunt's church family. That one pulled me out of lurkdom and I joined.

I hate that my name is offensive to people. Is there an administrator here who could just change my name to Walrus Bob? In my twenty posts here, already two people don't like it. I'd rather change it than be prejudged for it.

Thanks for stepping in, man. Very much appreciated.

35. I bet the other person and I are in the minority, so don't
worry too much about it. You can go to ask the admins forum and ask about changing it and see what they recommend. Explain why you're asking.

Here's a LINK: :7

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topics&forum=437

Although, not sure if you can post if you don't have a star. You can get one for like $10, maybe even $5? If you've got that, click the donate button and you're set to go.

But again, I'm guessing it won't bug too many people.

Hope you recover from your sunburn quickly -- I can certainly empathize. One year the one and only day I was out in the sun was July 4, up in the San Juan Islands. I was on a boat all day. The next day my forehead looked kind of BIG. I asked my boyfriend if it looked odd, he said "not TOO odd". The NEXT day I had kind of a DOME between my eyes. An art director at work said Jeez, Mary Ellen, you look like the front of my '57 Studebaker!
The NEXT day the bridge of my nose was about 3x wider than normal and my eyes were all puffy and swollen. Another co-worker said "wow! if it keeps going like this, tomorrow you'll have 4 lips!" Thankfully, it dissipated, but boy, was I sick for a couple of days. So see? I really DO empathize!

38. I just posted in the Ask the Administrators forum...
I will mail a donation. I may not post much, but I do like this place and would at least like to put my walrus avatar by my name. I just asked the admin to take the farting off my name.

I've always been an outdoors guy, but this yesterday threw me for a loop. I've made that same trip at least a dozen times. Never got sunburned...maybe a little pink on the cheeks and shoulders. This sunburn is so bad that even bending my knee kills me. Standing up is almost impossible. My whole body swelled up, and then the nausea and stuff started. My dog went with me--thankfully no ill effects on him. He'd go today if I felt like it. The sun was vicious here yesterday.

And I loled at your friend's 57 Studebaker appraisal. My face was protected by a hat and shades... so no effects much on my face. But my chest and back...and legs... feel kinda like I've been deep fried.

43. I always got burned every year. Thought I could FORCE
a tan on my oh-so-white Irish skin, so believe me, I know how painful it is and how sick you can get. Aloe Vera gel really helps, just make sure it doesn't have any alcohol in it or you'll wish you were dead!

Live and learn!

Glad your dog is doing okay!

46. I now have as a staple in my fridge...
Solarcaine. It's aloe vera gel plus lidocaine. If you don't have it, being that you're fair (and Irish) complected like me, you ought to get some. You can get store brands at CVS, Walgreens, and other places. A friend told me about it today, so I had my mom pick some up for me (yeah, I'm a big old wuss who sent my mom to the store for me). The stuff is AMAZING. Felt great and awful when I put it on, but the lidocaine immediately went to work on the burning. I'm putting it on every other hour now, and I can actually sit and be somewhat comfortable. Great stuff.

My dog didn't even get a nose burn. He spent most of the trip with his nose in the water, though, chasing his tennis ball.

56. That WOULD be helpful, but I don't go out in the sun at all
anymore (not that it's much of a challenge in Seattle), because I ended up getting melanoma. It sure would have been welcome in the day, though. I'm whack about sunscreen now. I know all about UV A, B, and C rays, which are the "deep" ones and which are the "shallow ones" and what protects best against each one. I've gone completely to the other side of the aisle, as they say. :7

57. That would be a major lifestyle change for me.
I've always prided myself on my worship of all things outdoors. Then I got bitten by a copperhead snake two years ago, which made me afraid to step off the front porch. Finally worked up the nerve to hit the river again, felt like exposure is the best way to overcome fear, even saw a few snakes on the river yesterday, and didn't overreact... but the sun got me. But damn it, I'm not giving up. I love the outdoors, taking my dogs out for runs on the river, and such.

Melanoma, though, yeah. Huge lifestyle changer there. I hope you caught it early and recuperated from it. If you don't mind me asking, what made you go to the doc about it? Did you find it or your dr?

I sustained a lot of sun damage when I was younger. I worry that I may pay for that one day.

58. There was just a mole on my chest that wasn't really gross at
all, just unattractive enough that I knew if I'd had it forever I would have been self conscious about it when I wore tube tops. (Tube tops!)

My dad was a doctor and I showed it to him and he had me in a dermatologist's office getting biopsied so fast my head was spinning. They caught it JUST before it entered my bloodstream, so they got it all. At the time, if it got past that barrier you were a goner, not sure now if they can actually treat it at that stage or not. It's been almost 25 years. One of the questions asked was "how many severe sunburns did you get before the age of 18?" and I answered "countless".

Just make sure you have a good sunBLOCK. Stuff with zinc is the best and they have zinc in products now that aren't all white like lifeguards' noses used to be.

Wow! A copperhead! :scared: I don't blame you for being hesitant afterward. It's a cellular thing, I think, your body doesn't want another attack! Glad you're okay, too!

59. You were lucky.
When I was working for a civil engineer's office--and this was a small office--we lost two coworkers in less than six months to melanoma. These guys weren't sun worshipers, just guys whose work often put them in the sun. That's had a lasting effect on me, the loss of those two great guys to something that would seem innocuous. One of them was my mentor in the office... and he went from being a healthy, hearty man to dying within months. It's an awful killer, melanoma.

Thanks for telling me your story...you were lucky, you know! And about childhood, I can relate. I stayed sunburned as a kid. But our folks didn't know much better. Heck, they put us outside and said be home at dark on weekends and all summer.

I had banana boat spray yesterday. I think I'll invest in something a little better for my next sun exposure. Tonight, I read that you should put sunblock on 30 minutes before exposure, so it penetrates the skin and doesn't wash off. I didn't know that. That explains why I burned yesterday.

About the copperhead bite, it was the worst thing I've ever gone through, but more mentally than physical. The bite was bad enough... painful as all get out. But mentally, even two years later, I have a fear of the outdoors like I've never feared anything before. I see snakes in the shadows everywhere. haha.

Thanks for being so welcoming here tonight. I almost said "fuck it" and left... then saw your post. A little kindness meant a lot to me tonight. Thank you for that.

She won a costume contest. He had dressed her as Link, from Legend of Zelda. The one in New Orleans I might attend next year, just to see the freaky people in costumes. He posted photos of people in some really extreme costumes. I, uh, learned what a furry is--that I could have done without. Haha.

47. Well nothing funnier than Captain Sheridan of B-5
and a Klingon Warrior exchanging recipes for Ale... both in costumes that could have come from the lot.

What is funny is, I know one person who lost the costume contest at a Star Trek convention. It wasn't authentic enough... here is the kicker... it came from the lot... it was used in production... but it was not authentic enough. That is when you go... fanboys... really go too far. Yep, he revealed that to the judges...

51. Now that's funny.
I guess it has to be an exaggerated form of Star Trek reality to win a contest. The recipe exchange thing made me laugh. Surreal. Haha.

My friend's daughter's costume was so simple, and she beat out some really bizarre, extreme costumes. But damn, the kid is too cute, costume or not, and I think that's what gave her the edge. I'll post a photo if I can find one.

Somehow Jay-Z is more important in their daily lives.

I think it goes back to what I heard George Carlin say one time, about how people are more concerned about their brand-name tennis shoes than their station in life. It just blows my mind.

But in the overall Google News heading (US edition) the list I posted in the OP is what's there. Like I said, it changes quarter-hourly, and now it's:

Top Stories
Captain America
Rihanna
Comic-Con
Amazing Spider-Man Trailer
Yao Ming
Rupert Murdoch
David Cameron
Mac OS X Lion
Debt ceiling
NASA

So it looks like Rihanna has taken Mila's place on the list. Haha.

Best decision I ever made.

Now when there's a something I need to watch, I watch it on www.tvpc.com. Maybe once or twice a month. Check it out. On the Live page it lists channels by country. Plus many international channels, too. I watched the news on an American station in Tokyo when the tsunami hit. Much better than anything being broadcasted here.

49. I think that should be the top of the searches...
but I'm biased, and admittedly so. A Fox News/ News Corp hater for a decade or more.

I gave my mom an old tv for her to use in her kitchen. Walked in once and it was on Fox News. I told her I had gladly given her the TV, but I'd better never see it tuned to Fox again. I was half-joking... but she got the message. :D

52. You...
Thanks for posting the story about your cousin and your aunt's church. You really have a gift for writing, for bringing the reader into the story. That's why I joined this forum. Thank you for posting that story. I really identified with what your cousin went through.

54. Here's the updated list (with link):
http://news.google.com/nwshp?hl=en&tab=wn

Google doesn't call them "top news stories." They just call it "Top Stories." There's a big difference there.

55. It's on the NEWS page, ergo news stories.
NEWS heading
top stories subheading
list.

Looks like Rupert is climbing a bit, though.
