General Dynamics to get piece of $1.3B arms sale to Egypt

General Dynamics is among the contractors selected by the Department of Defense to supply Egypt with 125 armed battle tanks under a proposed $1.33 billion contract, just as the country swears in a new cabinet in the wake of protests.
DOD released on the Federal Register Monday a notice about plans to sell to Egypt 125 armed Abram tanks, as well as spare parts and maintenance and support equipment and services through a $1.33 billion contract with General Dynamics, Honeywell International Inc. and Allison Transmission Inc. The sale will also require the assignment of about four U.S. government employees and 35 contractors for up to three years in Egypt to manage the production and fielding program.

General Dynamics Land Systems has manufactured the Abrams tanks for DOD since the early 1980s. Honeywell supplies the engines.

According to the notice, the proposed sale "will contribute to the foreign policy and national security of the United States by helping to improve the security of a friendly country that has been and continues to be an important force for political stability and economic progress in the Middle East." The additional tanks (Egypt already has more than 1,000 of them) will modernize Egypt's fleet, and contribute to its goal to update its military capability and enhance interoperability with the U.S. and other allies.
