Florida charter schools fail at an alarming rate.
MIAMI (CBS4) – When Governor Rick Scott visited Florida International Academy – a charter school - in Opa Locka in January, he brought his special advisor on education, Michell Rhee, with him.

Rhee, the controversial former superintendent of the Washington DC school system, is a big believer in spending public money on privately-operated charter schools.

“Who are we to deny a child, a low income child, who has the opportunity to take the same dollars and actually get a better education?” Rhee asked.

The answer may in fact be that kids in charter schools aren’t getting a better education.

1. doesn't surprise me at all.
They don't care if the schools succeed; the whole point was to shovel money to the private sector, not improve education.

2. A real gem buried in the CBS Miami piece...
Charter schools had a failure rate 740% higher than that of public schools.

That's the argument right there -- charter schools, at least the Florida version of them, do not work.

6. Exactly. The same school here in Jax where the governor signed his controversial education bill
received a grade of 'F' this year.

If that's not an omen I don't know what is.

3. They just need more money.
And more money. And more money. And more money. Charter schools can't fail. They can only be failed. :sarcasm:

4. Of COURSE, they're failing.
Public and charter schools.

You can't teach children to take tests without teaching context, what the subject matter means, how to apply it, making it comprehensible. The teachers aren't teaching and the students aren't learning.
