I understood that when my first husband said to me, "I'm going to fuck your lights out." I was not offended by the words themselves, but struck by their violence and ugliness. Words of violence for an act of... what did that make it. Not love certainly, but power over. So, I learned that words have meaning.
For years I've watched in dismay as sports terms have been used more and more often as slogans and metaphors in political campaigns.
Recently, I've watched in horror as military and marksmanship terms have come into usage in elections.
Many people understand the power of words to incite and inflame whole groups of people. Words can be used to bring us together or tear us apart. I prefer using words for the good of all.
I have to watch MYSELF, to not succumb to media manipulation by being conscious of language, context, and history.
Words, ideas and thoughts will always be more powerful than guns and swords.
Politics is not a game or war, unless you intend it to be so.
