After a traffic stop, minority drivers are more likely to get handed a ticket and their vehicles are more likely to get searched, according to a study released this month by the Illinois Department of Transportation.

The study of all 2010 traffic stops in the state of Illinois showed that white drivers who were stopped got tickets 55 percent of the time, while minority motorists who were stopped got tickets 63 percent of the time.

Among minorities, Hispanics fared the worst, getting tickets 65 percent of the time, with black and Asian motorists coming in at 62 percent.

However, Chicago cops appeared to be more even-handed, dishing out tickets to 65 percent of both white and minority motorists who were stopped.

items lying on the ground, or even drives off leaving the motorist lying spread eagle... this has really happened to black and hispanic males I now. Cop seems to want to find drugs or something to arrest them for.

But when you consider that black drivers are stop between 8 and 10 times as often as white drivers, the magnitude of the disparity changes. The first time I heard about any of this was a study done in Chicago in the 90s that showed black drivers stopped 8X as much as white drivers. But there are other studies done in other cities that show Chicago isn't the high end of this kind of behavior.

And Toronto cops are getting better, although we still had that display of nascent fascism around the G20.

And it's not because we have fewer minorities, either; Toronto's population is made up of a smaller number of hispanics, South Americans, Africans, Asians, Jamaicans, Bermudans, Indians...I swear that we have representatives from every country on earth. Of course, since Canada is a Commonwealth country, we have representatives from every former British colony on earth!

I suspect that it's simply that police officers are not recruited from choir schools.

Me and a black friend were driving from Mississippi to Iowa, me in my car, him in his. Driving through rural Jefferson County, everybody that I could see in a car was white, except for my friend. Guess who got his car pulled over and searched, and warned by the Deputy about driving in "his county"? A hint: it wasn't any of the white folks!

Well if you live in a red district like Dallas. I remember sometime back someone had gotten pulled over and had his car searched ( and found nothing ) Only later when he got home he remembered about his Kerry/Edwards08 bumper sticker.
