If you subscibe to Netflix, your rates are going up...just in case you missed the memo.
Earlier this week I receive this email:

Dear XXXXXX,

We are separating unlimited DVDs by mail and unlimited streaming into two separate plans to better reflect the costs of each. Now our members have a choice: a streaming only plan, a DVD only plan, or both.

Your current $9.99 a month membership for unlimited streaming and unlimited DVDs will be split into 2 distinct plans:

Plan 1: Unlimited Streaming (no DVDs) for $7.99 a month
Plan 2: Unlimited DVDs, 1 out at-a-time (no streaming) for $7.99 a month

Your price for getting both of these plans will be $15.98 a month ($7.99 + $7.99). You don't need to do anything to continue your memberships for both unlimited streaming and unlimited DVDs.

2. Hard to miss the memo as they sent it to everyone, AND
they provide a clear opportunity to ACCEPT rate increase, for both DVDs and Streaming, OR NOT, and to 'save' on one or the other.

3. Question for netflix subscribers re: streaming...
How much of the Netflix library is available via streaming? Are new releases normally only available on DVD? How about the old stuff?

I did the Blockbuster version for years, but got fed up with their abrupt pricing changes and then of course, the bankruptcy closed most of the stores--which was the only reason the "mail-in" plan made any sense. So, now, I just use the occasional "redbox" rental and leave it at that...

4. Yes... I made the mistake of thinking I could stream a new release
for that alone, I wanted to discontinue my subriscription. Once again, we see a company squeezing blood from a stone.

5. Most new movies are not available for streaming
With TV shows, you can usually stream the older shows, but the newer seasons are on disk only. This is usually (in my experience) a year wait and sometimes two year wait.

With Netflix/STARZ, there is now a 90 day wait to stream.

There is lots of old stuff to stream, and a lot of British stuff. Check our our Netflix group.

6. I need to chime in on this one
The account we have at my home is for DVDs only. We don't stream anything, since we can't get broadband internet where we live. Opting for DVDs-only, 2-at-a-time (our current plan) -- in other words, simply notifying Netflix that we won't be streaming at all, thanks anyway -- made our rate go DOWN. Not a lot, of course, but $3 a month. Which is, on a percentage basis, not inconsiderable. Hey, the annual savings of $36 is enough for us to go out to a couple of movies more in the course of a year.

Thanks, Netflix !!

8. You know I would have kept them if they just called it what it is
Not once did they say 'price increase' but instead treated this double billing like the greatest thing since slice bread.

The plan starts September 1st, 2011 - I plan to cancel my account August 31st, 2011

9. That's What All These Businesses Do........
Think Internet, Cable, Cell Phones, Texting, etc. First they get you hooked with their service and their rates then once they have you they raise them. We keep falling for it all the time. So many hand in our wallets now I don't know how we'll be able to continue to support.
