The last two protests at my state capitol that were significant were for climate change and in solidarity with Wisconsin.
The climate change protest was organized with many others by 350.org supporters and the crowd was estimated at over 400. We marched to the capitol a mile away, cops stopped traffic, music was played, speakers spoke, and a good time was had.
The pro Wisconsin protest was attended by 1000 people and again, music played, speakers spoke, and a concerned but good time was had.
Neither was recorded in the major local newspapers. I suspect few politicians noticed who weren't already on board. Good for reinforcement but it was nothing to concern the Republicans who were causing the problem in the first place. Especially with their friends at the local radio station reaching a crowd 100 times bigger.
I suspect that if 10% of those protestors had shown up at the state Limbaugh megastation we would have gotten more attention.
The Madison protests were fantastic, but at the same time the local Madison Limbaugh station (1310 WIBA), which also broadcasts Badger athletics for the University of Wisconsin and therefore is endorsed by them, has been reaching a huge audience, attacking the protestors, distorting the message, and getting Walker's back. It will play an important part in the next elections. In the Wisconsin situation there is a capitol inhabited by irrational Ayn Randian tools and it is the logical place to protest. But what about if your capitol is more democratic?
The right wing talk stations are the power centers for everything GOP. Limbaugh and Hannity and their wannabes are pushing Boehner and Cantor over the edge while lying about and threatening Obama. Limbaugh and Hannity have been telling their tens of millions of listeners, including most teabaggers, that not raising the debt ceiling is what this country needs. The debt owed to China will be paid and the entitlements going to the leeches of society will then have to be cut. And Boehner and Cantor are traitors if they even negotiate with Obama. That is what is driving Boehner and Cantor over the edge.
If you're getting concerned enough to protest to "get Obama's back" and encourage him to stand firm would you go to the state capitol where, if the media notices, they might pretend you're a teabagger?
Or, if your local Limbaugh megastation is well located, maybe with traffic nearby and maybe closer, would you go there to wave a sign?
Those are Tea Party headquarters, where they get their marching orders. Protests there would not be hard to interpret correctly.
