MADISON, Wis. (AP) — The top Democrat in the Wisconsin state Assembly urged Republican Gov. Scott Walker on Monday to reject maps redrawing political boundaries in the GOP's favor, saying if the governor attempted to come up with a more nonpartisan approach, it would go a long way toward restoring trust in the Statehouse after months of deeply partisan fights.
The GOP-controlled Legislature plans to take up the maps next week. Assembly Minority Leader Peter Barca said if Walker doesn't step in, the maps will probably end up being drawn by federal court judges just as they have the past three decades
"This is going to be a significant test of leadership for Gov. Walker," Barca said after a brief meeting of an Assembly committee that approved taking up the redistricting plans as soon as July 19.
Walker's spokesman Cullen Werwie did not immediately return a message seeking comment.
