Does everyone realize the magnitude of what happened today?? Sarah Palin put a hit out on someone...
in front of the whole country and today an assassin killed 6 innocent people trying to follow through with her commands.

This isn't conspiracy or coincidence. This actually happened today right underneath all of our noses!! This kind of thing by a major politician has never been so brazenly done in the history of American politics. Whether you believe it or not, Sarah Palin was one of the main contenders to run for President in 2012, and asked for someone to be killed and someone tried to follow through on this for her.

This is more than a typical political disagreement or political violence or previous assassination attempts by some rogue citizens. This is one of the most powerful politicians in the country publicly stating that she wants certain people killed and then people trying to kill them. I can't believe even some people here at DU are withholding judgement here on Palin. The facts are right in front of your face. She put crosshairs on someone who got a bullet in her head today.

143. 100 times worse than Bill Ayers
who accidentally killed someone. but didn't order anyone to kill. Sarah here and her ilk have.

However I would like to put this counter spin on this for a moment. Can we wait a bit before we fuck something up. First mention of a Sarah Palin connection and someone called whoever said it first on cnn's comments a retard. So let it be known a Sarah Palin supporter called a possible anti Sarah Palin supporter a retard first. Course no boths sids have said retard probably should watch a few episodes of CSI. namely the one in which a down syndrome person (which I don't know the current term is) is called a retard and killed for it. and at the end. to retard or retarded is to hold back.

and Grissom says to the a hole.. his life is about to be retarded.

Clearly I'm not shocked this happened, yes I am shocked it didn't happen in 2008, 2009 or 2010. Still shocked someone hadn't tried this on Obama. ( say tried because it's really not possible. although not impossible) :( Frankly the way security was around the Republican Conventions in St Paul in 2008 was sick. Where were they here? Dems don't rely on thugs to control their security. Or Minority Report style security.

I'm depressed, and I've got a moronic dad who keeps encouraging me to kill myself. Except I'm also a Christian and suicide is bad. My faith is better off than my dad who's a tea party member. Albiet it comes with a down side. I'm depressed and my only vent is politics. Keeps me sane. Usually his retort is that hey go ahead. and they won't charge him for mental abuse because I have no rights. I really have no idea. Someone puts a person down every day (lately he has not been acting like himself though) is that legal? Wouldn't have the balls to try. He's a big Vander Plats fan in Iowa. Who wants to circumvent our supreme court in Iowa. Already did it to 3 of them. I'm tempered by this fact. Knee jerks are not good and I hope we on the left can stop a few knee jerks. Dad does them often, I do them sometimes too simply because I'm in a corner. :( Like Sean Hannity trying to make a person do a knee jerk. They provoke a person just to prove they are right.

157. C-B, good to see this post. I've been warning about Palin for a long time.

I also disagree with those who are clucking away that she will be easy to beat so leave her alone. As far as I'm concerned she's dangerous. Also dangerous politically, she's got the whole right wing behind her, her party's base, which makes her nomination easier, which makes it easier for her to sail into the general election unbruised. She's polished herself enough and found judgment-free venues for her political filth that she's in much better shape for 2012 than when she was the VP nominee and she is DANGEROUS.

Palin has to be stopped NOW, politically.

"The vitriol we hear inflaming the American public by people who make a living doing that .... That may be free speech, but it's not without consequences."

during the campaign, and I'll never forget that. I'm not surprised at all at what's happened today. This despicable person needs to be held accountable for the shit she spews and creates. You can bet she's high-fiving it with her peeps behind the scenes as she's issuing her phony statement of remorse. That goes for McCain, too. What power! If evil exists, it is most definitely manifesting through Palin.

You can bet she's got to be scares sh*tless now. She was high-fiving it all the way to the bank yesterday...today her words inspired someone to kill SIX people, and even her lawyer has got to be telling her she should be scared. All we need is one victims family filing a wrongful death lawsuit against Palin over this and she'll never be heard from again. She may have thought her metaphors would never be taken seriously, but now that one has she will have to pay the price.

97. You just reminded me of the Geico spokesman D.C. Douglas who was fired
Edited on Sun Jan-09-11 11:22 AM by 1monster
by Geico under pressure from Andrew Bitebart fans after D.C. Douglass, as private citizen Lance Baxter, left a voice mail on Dick Army's Freedomworks:

"I called as a private citizen to make a complaint," explains Mr. Douglas. "Racism and homophobia are my Achilles heel, but unfortunately my message included inappropriate words and I am sorry for that. However, telling their members to harass my employer to get me fired is an egregiously disproportionate response to my actions." Mr. Douglas believes his connection to GEICO, a company already on FreedomWorks' boycott list for pulling their ads from Glenn Beck's show, is the main reason he was targeted so forcefully. "Even though I left the message during the week of March 23, the harassing calls didn't hit until April 14, the morning after I posted about my GEICO campaign on my Facebook page."
It's not clear if Douglas is gay, although in all press accounts of the firing, he mentions being enraged by the homophobia of the Tea Party movement. His message to FreedomWorks asked "how many retarded people" work there and whether the group would take responsibility when one of their members killed somebody. Douglas says he doesn't blame GEICO for his firing, but he's open to suing FreedomWorks. http://joemygod.blogspot.com/2010/04/geico-announcer-fired-for-voicemail.html

I guess that it is a no brainer that Sarah won't own up to any responsibility for her unacceptable imagery.

13. Or someone did it to get you to post that exact thing.
Using violence and hurt to try to change something. Including your views of what people think.

Then again you do the same thing by attaching the action of a terrible person to her. Thats what they want you to do.

Although I agree some people see only the bad, and do terrible things from that.

I do disagree with the violence, and such actions in society, I also disagree with those that use violence as a method to influence society.

Because in society a violent action has more sway with some people then many thousands of good thoughts.

I believe that attack was not a normal attack.

Depends how much of the news is accurate, if with violence it is from the wrong thoughts and wrong actions.

Not sure if you're new to the discussion today but the congresswoman shot just happened to be on Palin's list of people she thought should be killed.

It's all fun and metaphors until someone gets shot in the head and 6 other people get killed.

and is a horrible coincidence, if the shooter was in fact not specifically motivated by that graphic. I believe the evidence is more showing that he loved right wing crazies like the American Renaissance. I believe he hated Giffords when he met her back in 2007. We want to nab Palin for this but we have to be careful to say she was the specific cause of the shooting. If he hated Palin, then we lose a good chance just to point out that this nasty stuff exists.

59. First off yes it has, not in recent memory
but yes it has.

The 1850s come to mind.

What is the major saying? Oh yes something 'bout those who don't learn from history.

This is an escalation towards something ugly and depending on what happens in the next week or so, wether we will step from that edge or not.

But to say that this has never happened before, not in this form, but it has. And this is why Americans should make an effort to learn US History. Hell, we had people having serious fist to cuffs, and yes shootings...

Oh and for all our sakes I hope those in positions of authority realize just how much today escalated the situation. There is a reason why I keep gong back to the years preceding the Civil War.

77. The Nazis began with bullying threatening
Rhetoric. They'd get people upset, full of self righteous rage, then bullies would go find someone the Nazis scapegoated and kill or beat them up.The GOP are doing the same shit the Nazis did.

Here is an example that could've been taken out of Hitler's playbook

Savage: "We're going to have a revolution in this country"; "These people are pushing the wrong people around." Michael Savage discussed multiculturalism and predicted, "This is not going to go on in this country much longer. We're going to have a revolution in this country if this keeps up. These people are pushing the wrong people around." Savage further said that "the rage has reached a boil. If they keep pushing us around, and if we keep having these schmucks running for office catering to the multicultural people who are destroying the culture of this country ... guaranteed the people -- the white male in particular." He continued:

Let me talk specifically. The white male in particular -- the one without connections, the one without money -- has nothing to lose, and you haven't seen him yet. You haven't seen him explode in this country, and he's still a majority, by the way. In case you don't know it. He is still the majority. No one speaks for him. Everyone craps on him. People use him for cannon fodder. And he has no voice whatsoever. He has nobody speaking for him.

So he goes to these extreme fighting events. Take a look at them, and you'll see what the white male is capable of. And you're going to find out that if you keep pushing this country around, you'll find out that there's an ugly side to the white male that has been suppressed for probably 30 years right now, but it really has never gone away.

Republicans argue that Williams is seven cans short of a six pack, so they cannot be held accountable for the acts of deranged people. I do not believe that the Republican hate purveyors on Radio and TV and in Congress intended or could have foreseen this specific action. They say it’s only rhetoric go mobilize their base. I agree. However, they have invited vile people into their tent and accepted race and hatred in every form, and they know that among those people are some who are unbalanced enough to take their rhetoric seriously enough to act on it. And yet, they keep parroting the hateful rhetoric anyway. They are to blame for the actions their hate inspires.

* As noted by The Fold Blog last week, a right wing extremist, Byron Williams, opened fire on police in Oakland, CA during a traffic stop. The gunman was later found to have been a fan of Fox News and Glenn Beck. He told police his intention was to start a revolution by targeting organizations and people he had heard about on Fox News. His mother stated Williams "watched the news on television and was upset by 'the way Congress was railroading through all these left-wing agenda items.'

"Pittsburgh police say a man wearing a bulletproof vest opened fire on officers during a domestic disturbance call, killing three of them.
Police chief Nate Harper says the motive for Saturday’s shooting isn’t clear.

a brick with a note reading "Exremism in Defense of Liberty Is no Vice," which damaged a glass door at their office. Bricks have been hurled through Democrats' windows, a propane line was cut at the home of a congressman's brother and lawmakers who voted for a federal health care bill have received phone threats in the days before and after passage of the sweeping legislation. After a long season of angry rhetoric, waved guns, and media fury, there were real bricks flying last week, through real windows, of sitting congressmen and women.

Death threats. Lynching threats. White powder in the mail. A gas line cut.

The wacko's guns would stretch from here to mars. Seriously. You can almost gauge a wacko's wackiness by the number of guns they accumulate. More accurately, by the amount of ammunition they accumulate. When Obama was elected they bought so much ammo that all the gun shops ran out, they manufactured more and the gun shops ran out again. Just saying.

Those who say "Oh, get over it. It was just a lone crazy dude. No connection to the reality of politics. Move along. Nothing to see here"... are absolutely "numbed out and dumbed by time and age" to quote a song i've been learning.

They've never had any contact with the dark side of people, or they are too traumatized by the contact they did have, so they choose to pretend everything is all nice and happy everywhere and this is just an anomaly, a freak occurrence.

If anyone thinks imagery and repetition aren't powerful tools, they need to explain why the media spend so much time and money producing imagery and repetition for the masses. If anyone thinks that there aren't sick, deluded people ready to act on that imagery and repetition, they live in denial.

Talk about living in La-la Land.

Some dear people may not want to believe this is a bad, bad sign of things to come. In my opinion, the
immaturity, fear and various states of denial those people exhibit in their quest to make sense of this terrorism DO NOT CHANGE the fact that this could be a bad, bad sign of things to come.

My hope is that these murders and assassinations and assassination attempts stun this nation into some long-needed civility and rule of law.

The reality is that imagery and repetition, imagery and repetition...combined with bored, frustrated rage and hunger are not a good combo.

Here's to hope...

If they are allowed to get away with this, we can stand by for repeated assassinations of people who are in opposition to the conservatives. The first assassination is hard, but if allowed to stand each one that follows will become easier.

Its been thought of before. Find the deranged to do your bidding. The Terrorists game plan from the start has been the recruiting of young crazies for suicide missions.

believe that these guys can spew this hate and violence and remain on the air or in political spotlight. This kind of thing should be cause for firing or shunning. The mention of 'second amendment remedies' should result in single digit support, not celebration.

108. Sheriff Dupnik had it right when he said...
the bigger problem presented here is that intelligent people we need to run for public office will be
deterred from doing so from this incident. With the Tea Party able to show up at events with guns
and the killing of these people, the shooting of the congresswoman, it's hard enough to get decent,
civil and honest people to run, now we'll be forced to vote for those who are so insane already that we'll have
a government as corrupt as Afghanistan. Then we're in real trouble for they will do anything to destroy
this country. They've already given it away to foreigners for profit, why not turn us into a third world nation
and get our misery over with.

who are actually happy about this.

We have reached a place in this country where it is OK to celebrate the death of your enemy, as is often done in third world countries. The US is polarized to the point of complete otherization of one's opponent's as in battle situations. Anything can be justified.

There will be many dancing on these graves and feeling just fine, even celebratory, today.

The core problem is how easily the right wing mouthpieces/leadership have turned their followers into subhuman automatons, mindless zealots who support the killing of their political opponents.

Palin is a RW kook, but she didn't put a hit on anyone. Furthermore, the LW blogs (like DailyKos for example) had the Blue Dogs in their cross hairs too.

The only one responsible for this tragedy is the sick bastard who shot them.

The rhetoric needs to be toned down on both sides of the political spectrum.

161. It may or may not have played out that way, but
no way was Palin's intent to have anybody murdered (and I f****** hate her). There should still be a LOUD call for a cessation of the ugly rhetoric that has now become de rigeur, but Palin is no more responsible for this guy's actions than the makers of a shitty video game are responsible for one of their player's murderous rampages.

Having said that, I believe that those video games, like the hateful goading we hear regularly from Palin, Beck et. al, should be made illegal and banished (an unpopular view here, I know).

163. Just Curious...
About six months ago I was surfing the Internet visiting various left leaning blogs. On one blog a conversation was taking place that eventually implied that Sarah Palin should be shot. Others chimed in and agreed...

My question for you is this. What if Sarah Palin was shot? Could we legally hold the owners of this blog, including those that advocated her being murdered, responsible in any way?

(Sorry...I don't recall the name of the blog or I would reference here. I was visiting a bunch of sites and I do not recall).

179. Could be....if the discussion is what motivated one of the people there to kill her...
there could definitely be some sort of legal action against them. Not the owners of the blog, they are not the ones who control what people say, but anyone who was getting other people worked up about it.

That's the fine line here...it isn't inherently illegal to make threats against someone, but if someone follows through with those then you can definitely be held accountable for inciting violence.

The assassinations and attempted assassinations of Democrats needs to stop now. They've been terrorizing us for 50 years now. They can whine all they want to, but when they put our hits on our United States Congressmen and one of their followers carries out that hit, whether successful or not, we are going to point it out. They are lawless, bloodthirsty assassins.

They are slaughtering us and they expect us not to even tell them to stop? Have they lost their fucking minds?
