It doesn't take a psychic to get this right...
Let's start with the reality. The corporations own our democracy, and they
own all of our bought-and-paid-for politicians. They always get their way.
They'll get their way this time.

Sure, as spectators to this coup, we will be treated to some DC kabuki theater--with the
Republicans playing the mean bullies and the Democrats playing the doe-eyed, spineless twits
who just can't seem to get it together. However, the back-room and boardroom deals
have been inked long before the politicians take center stage left and Americans lap up
every scripted line.

The corporations, the elites and the powerbrokers want us further eviscerated--and they
also want their interests protected. What happens will most certainly follow those goals.

There WILL be cuts to Social Security, Medicaid and other entitlements. My guess is that
these cuts will be "adjustments" that can be easily prettied and propagandized into slogans
such as, "This isn't really a cut. It's just a much-needed adjustment that will SAVE these
programs that will fail, fail, fail unless we do this!" Bottom line, it's a cut, and we'll see
more cuts in the future. This is just a warm up.

There will also be no MEANINGFUL raised taxes on the wealthy or on corporations. Oh, we'll get
some trickery and illusions for sure (see previous reference to kabuki theater). We still have
to be bamboozled. The corporations may lose some deductions--but wow is that a laugh-riot. Those
entitlements can be re-instated in a flash--in some other 200 page bill. One by one, they'll get
those deductions returned. And--if the corporate tax rate is lowered in this deal--what a windfall
the top .5 percent will get. A year from now, they'll have their lower tax rates PLUS all of their
deductions returned to them.

Lovely how government works in these times!

This nonsense will be packaged in a load of slogans and rhetoric. Obama will give a stern (oh so stern!)
speech about the debt and how we must cut to save the nation--and how wise and stoic compromise is, in these
trying times. We don't always get our way, remember! Maybe Obama, once again, will specifically mention the
whiny left wing of the party--and remind them, one more humiliating time, that they need to stop being
such purists and "come together for the good of this nation".

The Republicans will nash their terrible teeth and roar their terrible roars--as if to show us all
how passionate they are about saving the children from horrible, awful debt. Never mind that
Bohner voted to raise the debt ceiling 17 times in his career. The debt ceiling is nothing but
a timely device--used to justify the drowning of entitlements and the continued destruction of the
middle class. The debt ceiling is also an opportunity to continue pouring money into the Swiss
Bank accounts of the rich and into the corporate coffers. Trickle up---it's what's for dinner.

Many people understand that this is similar to what the end result will be. You don't need psychic powers
to understand DC politics, you just need to understand that our politicians are corrupt and the corporations
and the top .5 percent make the decisions.

1. Well said.
This is the reason I'm going to vote for the best candidate. One that shares my values and has integrity. I'm done with voting the lesser of evils...fuck that.

2. Good prose.
Meanwhile, we continue to flush trillions down the war toilet.

Gah.

5. Gah...is right!
We quibble over cutting programs for poor children, which amounts to pennies--compared
to the trillions we spend on war.

It is maddening. I'm with you. I'm beyond anger. "Gah" describes it perfectly. I'm
just astounded at how stupid they think we are.

6. Absolutely...

What bothers me the most is that we fall into the trap. They set up the
arguments and we fall in line. We're ensnared in a verbal grudge match, while
our politicians and corporations are off looting the bank.

The right gets their talking points through their radios. Right now, they're
all bemoaning the horrors of the national debt and how we MUST cut in order
to save the universe.

Then, we on the left, develop talking points that are based on deflect the contrived arguments
that the neocons/corporatists set up for us.

The real argument is that the corporations control it all. They're hurling toward
getting everything they want--with both Democrats and Republicans making it happen
for them.

As long as people DON'T understand the reality--we will continue to blow hot air
into ether-based arguments that mean absolutely nothing. The debt ceiling is a
big shiny object that no politician in DC gives a rat's ass about. They've
voted to raise it over and over and over again. NOW they care about it...really?
After spending trillions on war they care about pinching pennies?

They care about controlling the budget, cutting entitlements and trickling up more
money to the upper crust. Plain and simple.

We can't fall for their tricks. We're arguing about hot air while they're robbing us blind.

That has to be the starting point for any planning.

7. I don't know why
the electoral college doesn't just pick the president and save us all the agony and campaign bullshit. The amount of money saved would pay off the debt/deficit lickedy split.

Well, actually the why of it is pretty clear - then they couldn't call it a democracy and fool half of the people all of the time.

8. It's very clear...
that both sides only allow any pro-corporate politicians to gain any power.

They select the candidates long before the primaries and they leverage the media
to make it happen.

If a candidate is not pro corporate--they are told how it's going to go down.

12. So many of us understand that the corporations rule,
yet we are told over and over again that we're helpless to effect any changes that aren't directed by toadies in government who are obviously working only to further the interests of those same corporations. And people still call this a democracy. USA, Inc. is more like it.

I've been listening to the debates on raising the debt ceiling on C-Span most of the day and its a good thing I can't reach through the monitor and poke a fist in the eyes of a few of those corporate toadies. Funny thing, the ones who pissed me off all had a "r" behind their names. Lock step. I could almost see them clicking their heels behind the podium. People vote for these bastards against their own best interests. I'm stumped.

10. Nice job of setting things up so you're right no matter what happens.
I love it when people do this. It's sooooo clever.

11. Uh, I think I was pretty clear...
about what would happen.

I clearly stated specifics--that Soc Sec and other entitlements would be cut, and also
that no meaningful tax raises on the rich would happen either.

Hey, if I'm wrong--no problem. I'm wrong.

However, it's a bit bizarre to suggest that "no matter what happens" I'm right. There's
a million eventualities and possiblities here. I actually picked TWO specific things, and
I explained why.

Nice snark. I don't happen to think I'm "clever". I'm exhausted from the corporate takeover
of our government. I come here to emote (writing is a release for me) to support others who
feel the same.

17. That's an interesting question...
...and it's very sad to know the answer. The top 1 percent will never
be made to pay their fair share, because they paid off our politicians.

Our system is just so sick...so, so sick.
