Administration sources cautioned AGAINST a Washington Post report Wed. Night.
Social Security recipients could be impacted by these changes in the CPI, but administration officials Wednesday night cautioned against a Washington Post report that “major changes” were being contemplated in the retirement program.

I think we all should wait a bit before we go off the handle.

2. Very good advice, but the horse has already run out of the barn
and is about to do some laps around the pasture.

Once again, I'm confident this WON'T be what so many are pre-lambasting/pre-excoriating/pre-bashing the President over.

5. This is the story by the way
President Obama is pressing congressional leaders to consider a far-reaching debt-reduction plan that would force Democrats to accept major changes to Social Security and Medicare in exchange for Republican support for fresh tax revenue.

At a meeting with top House and Senate leaders set for Thursday morning, Obama plans to argue that a rare consensus has emerged about the size and scope of the nation’s budget problems and that policymakers should seize the moment to take dramatic action.

In debt talks, Obama offers Social Security cuts
Obama, Democrats not ready to play 14th Amendment card with debt ceiling

As part of his pitch, Obama is proposing significant reductions in Medicare spending and for the first time is offering to tackle the rising cost of Social Security, according to people in both parties with knowledge of the proposal. The move marks a major shift for the White House and could present a direct challenge to Democratic lawmakers who have vowed to protect health and retirement benefits from the assault on government spending.

And they are cautioning against it... I am smelling trial balloon... email the wh people.

6. We don't want your deals, anymore, Barack. Go back to the WH and think about it some more.
And, the next trial balloon we see, gets shots down.

7. NOW is precisely the time to sound off, not after the die is cast
this may be why we are getting these new signals.

8. Doesn't that make the CPI adjustments much more palatable?
"Don't worry, this is the worst of it. Calm down."

I'm sure that will make my parents feel much safer.

11. There is a story my dad likes to tell.
It's about a farmer who wants to reduce the cost of feeding his horse. So gradually, one straw at a time, he feeds the horse less and less every day. But still, the horse had to work for his keep.

It seemed to work for a long while. The farmer was jubilant, he thought he had managed to wean his horse from food almost entirely. At last he took that one last straw to the horse. This was it!

But the story ends badly, because, as was inevitable from the beginning, the horse died.
