Obama Returns to New York to Raise Money, Dine With Bankers
By Hans Nichols

June 23 (Bloomberg) -- The last time President Barack Obama flew to New York for a Broadway show, it was for a long-promised date with his wife.

Today’s New York trip was a less intimate affair: a $1,250- per-person fundraiser with gay and lesbian activists and a $35,800-per-plate dinner with Wall Street bankers. After dinner was a performance of the musical “Sister Act,” where he will be joined by the show’s producer, actress Whoopi Goldberg, and young Democratic donors.

The dinner at Daniel, a restaurant on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, drew some of Obama’s biggest donors to the 2008 campaign, as well as some who initially backed his rival for the party’s nomination, then-Senator Hillary Clinton.

“There’s a disquiet out there,” the president told the wealthy donors, because people “recognize that we haven’t yet broken through to the future that we want.”...

8. What would wealthy donors know about disquiet or breaking through?

I don't believe any politician or banker really feels our pain...especially at 35,800 per.

Now if President Obama had a $50 plate fundraiser with supporters who had give him that in the past then there might be a better understanding of what real pain, fear and desperation is.

9. You're right. They don't know about our pain, nor do they care.
But Obama might learn something from us. If he would only listen...

21. Wow how generious of him
and a raffle too to get the dinner ticket :eyes: Now I would be impressed if he had a dinner where the average guy paid $5.00-$50.00 and they had a raffle for ONE bankster to attend.

29. Oh, well, that's different.
Otherwise, he might install only bankers responsible for the U.S.'s financial downfall into his cabinet so they can continue to guide fiscal policy in the exact same way they guided Bush . . . Nah, that $38,500 PER PLATE doesn't buy access or anything. :eyes:

38. A total of four donors? Are we sure that President Obama will be
Edited on Fri Jun-24-11 02:53 PM by Dept of Beer
able to handle that amount all at once?

I knew about this contest. What I had stated was that he should have dinner with donors that had given him $50 during the last campaign and not just 4 of them. The number would be better at 400.

Or perhaps he should only have dinners with $50 and under contributors in small groups for a while to see fist-hand the real pain. Some of those who gave in the past may not have it in their budget this time around.

Do they still count?

someone should brief Obama on the top 20 DU news stories of the day - then we might actually get somewhere. seems he only gives a shit about us when he's up for election though - and even then i wonder...

4. Good. As Mitch McConnell said just yesterday, "Citizens United gave us a level playing field."
Edited on Fri Jun-24-11 01:26 AM by ClarkUSA
The Citizens United decision's effect on campaign spending killed Democrats in 2010 and will sink Dem chances in 2012 unless Dems start raising money hand over fists from legitimate donors from all walks of life.

If I was a billionaire, I'd give the campaign as much money as the Koch Brothers promised to give in 2012 to support Republicans: $80M

28. What will the donors want in return for their investment
in our President? I suspect governance will be tilted in their favor. Whether he needs the money to get reelected or not is irrelevant in the face of the sheer influence. We work for who pays us. Who's paying our Democrats?

6. The Last Supper
My fantasy - with so many criminals gathered in one place, lock them all in and call it
the new white collar prison. And WE wouldn't even have to pay for it this time - they're all magicians creating wealth out of thin air, so surely they can create their own food and water...

Shhhh....don't wake me up!

Obama, are you really so hungry that you don't discriminate about WHO's hand your eating out of?

donate to political campaigns. But instead I will be sending that money to someone like Dennis Kucinich.
