Confirmed: President Obama hasnít evolved on marriage
by Joe Sudbay

The President just concluded his remarks at the big LGBT fundraiser in NYC. And, it's confirmed, he didn't evolve on marriage....One thing I thought was very odd for this particular crowd was referring to Election Night 2008 as "a perfect night." Maybe for him, but we lost rights that night when Prop. 8 passed in California. That's far from perfect. In fact, it doesn't often happen in America. And, it caused a new wave of activism and intensity. I actually think one of the fundamental problems we had with Team Obama during the beginning of his presidency (including the transition/Inauguration with Rick Warren) was that no one fully grasped what Prop. 8 did to many LGBT Americans. Not sure why no one on his staff caught that, but it's like pouring salt in a raw wound.

Besides that, the usual stuff. Hope everyone got their money's worth. But, looks like we'll need to keep up the pressure. Remember, we're doing this for his own political good. The President is already behind the curve of public opinion on marriage, particularly with young voters. He looks out of touch. It's still early. There's still time for Obama to evolve. It will be another political calculation on his part. Hopefully, he's beginning to understand that it's good politics to be on fully on our side.

5. It's sad to see someone who wants to be seen as young and hip
making the same old stale mistakes. Sad.

3. He never will evolve, either. At least not in the near term. He's made that quite clear.
He's a civil union kind of guy, and he has a quarantine on the "M" word. He's not stupid--that's how he won South Carolina and knocked Clinton out of the running. He's not going to backtrack, and anyone who hoped he would is pipe-dreaming.

This shouldn't be a surprise to anyone. It's not like he kept it a secret.

It's unlikely that his GOP opponent in the next election will be more liberal on this issue. It will be a case of "devil you know" and/or "If you don't like Obama, you'll HATE the Republican" when it comes time to pull the lever. He has no incentive to move further to the left on this issue. He's staked out his POV and he will not budge, at least not until he's reelected. Then and only then, if he wants to leave a legacy and change his mind, he can do so without fear of reelection consequences.

4. "But all in all, it's been a fabulous year for Laura and me." G W Bush, Dec. 20 2001
Yeah, like that.

6. Man, if the source were different,
We'd be hearing all about how 'racist' that remark is. Then anyone who said it wasn't racist would be told they didn't 'get it', or that they were also subconsciously 'racist'. Yeah, Obama has to 'Evolve'... from...?

The view from 10,000 feet is very amusing.

7. What? The 'evolve' meme comes from Obama's statement that his views on gay marriage are "evolving".

8. I found this quote telling (emphasis mine):
"With your help, if you keep up the fight, if you will devote your time and your energies to this campaign one more time, I promise you we will write another chapter in that story...I'll be standing there, right there with you."

13. That's pretty much where he is on all things progressive.
For progressive causes: If you do the fighting and make me do it, then we can do it!

For corporate/Republican causes: Let me bend over backwards to meet you at your demands immediately. We'll call it a compromise, you'll get everything you want. In fact I may even negotiate it back so you can get more than you initially asked for.
