I'm one of those "Legacy DU'ers"..I'm Pissed and Disappointed...
Maybe there will be CHANGE WE CAN BELIEVE IN or NOT.

But, this is what MY OLD ROOTS SAY to ME...Maybe "WE" are not needed, anymore?

Oh-oh, yes I'm the great pretender
Pretending that I'm doing well
My need is such I pretend too much
I'm lonely but no one can tell
Oh-oh, yes I'm the great pretender
Adrift in a world of my own
I've played the game but to my real shame
You've left me to grieve all alone
Too real is this feeling of make-believe
Too real when I feel what my heart can't conceal
Yes I'm the great pretender
Just laughin' and gay like a clown

I seem to be what I'm not, you see
I'm wearing my heart like a crown
Pretending that you're still around
Too real is this feeling of make-believe
Too real when I feel what my heart can't conceal
Yes I'm the great pretender
Just laughin' and gay like a clown
I seem to be what I'm not, you see
I'm wearing my heart like a crown
Pretending that you're still around

1. Luckily for me, I was not left alone, and don't think anyone else should be left either.

I know there are things still around, becuase reality continues to bend.

And with more thoughts on that comment, I am not a clown or gay, but some might think that, that is their choice, not that that would matter anyways.

3. Ahh but for that to occur, the world must become more just and compassionate.
So is it the journey or the goal?

And the beer and travel money will be sent.

5. A clown or gay? What the fuck does that mean?
Sounds mean and bigoted. Just so you know.

12. It sounds mean and bigoted only to those ignorant of the song.

13. Are you serious?
It's gay as in happy, it's not meant to be disparaging towards homosexuals.

4. Ah there you are Koko....
I knew that you, one of DU's few original "liberal lions"* left, were still here. :fistbump:

And a really large K&R for good measure. ;)

*A nod toward and the utmost respect to the original "liberal lion". You are so missed Teddy!!

7. Hello,
As we've learned to our good grief and frustration, communications and inspirations in the ether are way tricky and difficult. And getting more so. Have at it still if you please, my brave heart.

"Ohh you're a dream
Hide your head in the sand
You're far away, when I want you around
And you leave me lonely when I'm feeling down

Do your ever wonder, or worry about me
Did I ever love you, did you ever love me"

9. Stinky...
That post should die. It came off wrong..and not as I intended. I don't know if you are snarking me with this post...(given DU these days..one never knows) but I was going through old music tonight (depressed about Obama's speech last night) and found this old song from the Platters about "The Great Pretender." I got into it and didn't notice that "laughing and gay like a clown" could be read these days as "anti-gay" as a lifestyle. These were just a great group of singers who wouldn't have put "gay" in a song in the early 50's as a slur...but...everyone is so sensitive these days.

Anyway...I wanted the post to die but I wanted to reply to those who responded because the post seemed to offend the repliers.

I hope you didn't take it as anything other than a song that reminded me of Obama (The Great Pretender) and how I see him these days...and it was just a whim of a post that deserved to die (because it was a post that no one could understand and that offended people) and so I'm just letting you know that. I'm not answering you there because I want the post to die.

Peace and regards,
KoKo

11. Actually, I took it in what I suspect was your original intent.
I'm of an age where I can recall first hand songs and sayings (like this one) where the word gay was never intended to have the meaning it does today.

Mark Twain wrote of "Deadeye Dick". It was innocent when written, became the bane of teachers reading English Lit aloud in class, and took on yet another meaning about a decade ago with a certain hunting trip.

Short answer to you: I took it in the higher sense, not the more base sense.

No snark was intended.
