After reading the June 11 article "AT&T, T-Mobile deal has support," I was dismayed to learn both North Carolina labor unions and the N.C. NAACP have joined the business lobby in supporting the $39 billion merger. We've already seen the conquering power of big money both in D.C. and Raleigh to ill effect.
It should be noted that AT&T contributed $386,000 to the House Tea Party Caucus members in the 2010 elections as well as to U.S. Sens. Rand Paul, Marco Rubio, Mike Lee and Pat Toomey. Are we to pretend these people serve the interests of either labor unions or the NAACP? And all for a promise to spend $8 billion on what will be their own network? What a deal.
It seems we the people have no Roosevelts to vote for to enforce anti-trust laws and foster competition in this second Gilded Age. This despite suffering through the ill effects of "too big to fail" and the speculation bubbles that burst. We can only hope the FCC says no to monopoly power.
