20. I know they promote Hartford. But what I'm asking is...
Did it begin as an insurance company; and,
IS IT only an insurance company?

Or does it just advertise insurance companies and other companies?

25. It is an existing insurance company -- seniors buy insurance from them to supplement
Edited on Sat Jun-18-11 02:52 PM by defendandprotect
the 20% which Medicare doesn't pay --

You can probably check all of this for specifics on the internet --

but any senior who expects that this company which makes money from the government

will support them over government pressures would be very wrong!!

Seniors need to organize on their own --

30. I am a former member of AARP and carried Hartford
Insurance for about 10 years and recently switched to 20th Century, which is $200 a year less than I paid for Hartford. Hartford was advertised as being cheaper for seniors. WRONG!!

Not that I like any insurance company. All are thieves.

5. I am an old AARP member
We even had AARP/Hartford car insurance, until they raised our rates by 70 percent for no reason. We switched to another company--no big deal.

And I like the AARP magazine--at least it usually has articles of more interest to me than 80 percent of the other 20 magazines for which I have subscriptions.

And I know that Social Security has changed the method of computing benefits every thirty years or so, so it they need to do it now, that would be nothing our of the ordinary.

If I choose to not renew my AARP membership, it would be for some other reason.

7. My husband has it, and so does my brother.
They do it for the insurance. I may join with my husband if their insurance works out for me. I am not yet eligible.

I will have to wait and see about all these charges that are flying around.

14. Meh, you probably don't really need your social security. I know people that count on what they get
from social security and their only means of survival. I don't think that you are one of them from your statements.

"I know that Social Security has changed the method of computing benefits every thirty years or so, so it they need to do it now." What are you really talking about here?

24. It should have been
"so IF they need to do it now"

The amendments to the Social Security Act in 1939 provided that a benefit amount be based on a formula that considered earnings after 1936 and before the year of death or retirement. (This later was called "old start."

The 1950 amendments provided for using earnings after 1950 instead of 1937, if the resulting benefit was higher. This was the "new start" method.

The 1978 amendments changed the computation to used "indexed" earnings amounts. This resulted in benefit amounts that were generally lower than they would have been under the prior method of computation. The individuals first affected by this were those born in 1917,and many of them believed they had been cheated. People born from 1917-1921 could have their benefit computed under the old method if the benefit were higher, but earnings beginning with the year of attainment of age 62 could not be used.

It is understandable that people not yet eligible for Social Security might feel angry about changes to the program. I am just trying to explain that Social Security has been changed over the years. Generally, these changes have been in response to economic and social issues.

9. Even if there is no substance to the story,
AARP still needs to know that this sort of stance is not tolerable. Cut the wars, increase taxes on people who already have enough money to last several generations, and you've solved the Social Security "problem".

By the way, my mom has been a member for a long time but has grown disenchanted because of the direction the organization has taken in recent years (one reason why I have not joined). So I wouldn't be surprised if there actually is some substance to the article.

they sent emails out to the membership denying it. I received one in my inbox. I still emailed them a letter saying lift the cap and leave the rest alone.

He was directly quoted by CBS. How do you know the email was from him?

Their CEO made a huge mistake and now they are back peddling as well as denying which is a good thing. The backlash is huge. I have emailed them my displeasure. I feel your post is a bit juvenile.

8. My rabid Republican relative
absolutely hates AARP because AARP supported Obamacare.

So, I'm waiting for more info before I jump to any conclusions about their stand.

My AARP medicare supplement is great and I definitely won't give it up.
