There is one one objective that makes sense of Rick Perry's actions:

And it is not the GOP presidential nomination.

It is his positioning of himself as the person who can "legitimize" Romney to the religious right zealots in the GOP base.

In ordinary times his partnering with not just the religious right, but with an extreme fringe of the religious right, who he hired as directors of his "apolitical" prayer rally in Reliant Stadium, would make no political sense.

Especially for a shameless, coifed snake-oil salesman like Perry.

It does make sense, however, if Perry's goal is not the GOP presidential nomination, but to re-transform himself into the ideal vehicle for Romney to make himself acceptable to the GOP's insane base.

I think Rick Perry's goal is a Romney/Perry ticket.

1. Very little of what Perry says or does makes sense.
Unfortunately, this makes perfect sense, in a Texas sort of way. I'm speculating he thinks a loss as number 2 in 2012 will set him up for a run in 2016 and an unlikely win in 2012 sets him up for a run in 2020.
