Bill O'Reilly on Science: You Can't Explain the Tides
Bill O'Reilly on Science: You Can't Explain the Tides

Apparently, Bill O’Reilly has never heard of the moon. In a debate Tuesday with Dave Silverman, head of the American Atheist group behind this, the Fox host tried to prove the existence of God by citing the unknowable mysteries of the tides. “I’ll tell you why not a scam, in my opinion,” he told Silverman. “Tide goes in, tide goes out. Never a miscommunication. You can’t explain that. You can’t explain why the tide goes in.”

Silverman looked stunned. “Tide goes in, tide goes out?” he stuttered. O’Reilly pressed on. “The water, the tide—it comes in and it goes out. It always goes in, then it goes out. … You can’t explain that. You can’t explain it.” Of course, Raw Story points out, people who passed high school science might tell you that tides are caused by the gravitational pull of the moon as it orbits the earth. But Silverman had a better response: “Maybe it’s Thor up on Mount Olympus who’s making the tides go in and out"

5. The arrogance of his ignorance.

I once saw him, in a discussion about the Koran and Islam being a violent religion, challenge a Bible expert who said you can pull similar passages from the Bible.

She quoted Jesus as saying, "I come into the world to bring not peace but a sword." Bill-O the clown yelled,"What are you talking about? Jesus never said that." He was challenging a Biblical scholar!!

How does this man justify what he is doing? Nobody can be this stupid. This is just plain ignorance and lack of care for true facts.

21. Wow, that was painful
Seriously, there are like a million such links on YouTube. I watched a 5 minute vid by these guys called Miracles. Not sure if it was over or under my head, but I didn't get it. If there's something there, lemme know.

I have always wondered about forces such as gravity and magnetism. I understand them at some level, but when it comes right down to it, I totally don't understand them. Why would these forces exist, and behave in the ways they do? Seems very mysterious to me. What are these invisible forces that attract matter to other matter? For some reason it's always blown my mind to think of it.

When I saw the O'Reilly clips, it made me think of my own inability to fully grok these forces. I think that's probably where he was coming from. He's an arrogant ass, but he's not that stupid, just not wise.

Apologies to all for anything resembling a defense of this loathsome man.

26. O'Reilly has had enough time to respond to this.
Is he really still that stupid? Or did he retract his statements?

I think it was Colbert who pointed out in his show that he said it numerous times.
