2 people die as bear flies through SUV
A bizarre auto accident involving two vehicles and a bear has left two people and the bear dead, Canadian authorities told news outlets.

Police in Quebec said a 250-pound male black bear wandered onto a road and was struck by a small car. The impact sent the animal hurtling through the air, where it smashed the windshield of an oncoming sport utility vehicle and went out through the back window, the television network CBC reported.

The SUV's driver and a backseat passenger were killed; a front-seat passenger suffered minor injuries, police told CBC. No one in the car was hurt.

It's bear mating season, and many male bears are out looking - sometimes recklessly - for females, so drivers on rural roads should be watchful, hunting guide Daniel Larocque told CBC.

1. The bear violated the Lug Nut Rule
The vehicle with the most lug nuts always has the right-of-way.

28. O.K. this one struck my (macabre) funny bone! LOL!
Maybe because I'm terrified of the semi's with those fricking giant lug nut on all of their wheels. I always fear they're going to fly off and come through my windshield.

7. Yes, it's terrible when deer attack. There should be warning signs:

24. years ago, I almost ran into a moose
that I could have driven my little Jetta underneath. I'm sorry about your friend, he did the right thing by trying to avoid it, usually chances of survival are better, but not always.

26. I almost got taken out by a buffalo in South Dakota.
Husband and I were on our way to a campsite in a little compact Chevy and a HUGE bull ran in front of the car while I was driving at about 11pm.

It happened so damn fast I didn't even have time to scream. He would have crushed us like little teeny tiny bugs.

4. Wow, that front-seat passenger must be traumatized.
Somehow, I'm thinking the physical injuries were mild; psychological, not so much.

6. How fast was that car going?
To send a 250 pound bear through two windows I bet they're speeding...sucks, but in such areas people need to be careful.

21. The bear went through the windshield of the car coming in the opposite direction...
relative speeds, and all that.

9. I had to brake hard for a bear once, but I was on my motorcycle
Didn't hit him, but was at a dead stop staring at a bear with nothing between him and me.

Long odds to be killed by a ricocheted bear though.

12. A deer killed two ladies in my grandfather's rural town in much the same way.
It just flew straight through both windshields, front to back, taking them out.

14. Cows fly too...
Mr P's brother was driving along in his convertible something-or-other many years ago (when cars were made out of sturdier stuff) when he hit a cow, which flew up into the air and landed in the back seat.

Dead, unfortunately...

But my BIL lived through it.

16. It helps
to slow down when driving on these back rural roads. 5 MPH less than the speed limit gives you more time to react and avoid hitting an animal.

19. Oh you wouldn't believe some of the people who come down my road...
It's a dirt road on the side of a hill. Large gully on one side, a steep embankment with brook on the other. And a dead end, too.

People just FLY down the hill past my house like it's a city street.

One of these days someone is going to hit a bump the wrong way and go crashing over the embankment into the brook. Or maybe take out my mailbox and telephone pole out front. I'm just glad my house is set back 100+ feet from the road.

18. Something like this happened a few years ago, just a couple of miles from where I live.
Edited on Wed Jun-08-11 10:18 AM by Bunny
A seven-months pregnant woman was killed when a car coming the opposite way hit a deer, which got thrown through her windshield. She was in the front passenger seat and was killed on impact, as was her unborn baby. Her husband was driving and I think a couple of her kids were in the backseat. They were unscathed.

That was really sad.
