Pope champions marriage, family on Croatian visit

ZAGREB — Pope Benedict XVI left Croatia for Rome Sunday, ending a two-day visit to the staunchly Catholic country where he drew large, jubilant crowds and urged Europe to respect Christian values.

He wrapped up his visit at an open-air mass before hundreds of thousands of faithful, where he urged Catholics to defend the traditional family and told couples that living out of wedlock was no substitute for marriage.

"Do not give in to that secularised mentality which proposes living together as a preparation, or even a substitute, for marriage!" he said in his homily during mass outside the capital.

The head of the world's 1.1 billion Roman Catholics also urged lawmakers to introduce legislation that "supports families in the task of giving birth to children and educating them." ..........(more)
