Long Weekend in Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor, ME....

Over Memorial Day weekend my husband, myself and my in-laws went up into Maine. Though I have lived in New England all my life and been to Maine numerous times, I've never been to Mount Desert Island which houses Acadia and Bar Harbor.

Our National Parks are such a treasure. So far I've only been into two of them (Acadia & The Great Smoky Mountains). I hope to visit many more once my husband retires.

Well anyway, I wanted to share the pictures my husband took. There are too many to just post so you will have to go through the link I provide if you are interested in seeing them. It was very foggy the whole time we were there but we still got some good shots.

Here is a run down of what you will be looking at:

Friday:
Pictures 1 thru 3 were taken on Rte3 in Trenton, ME right before we crossed the bridge onto Mt Desert Island. Our cottage was at Salisbury Cove.


Saturday:
Pictures 4 thru 16 were taken in and around Bay Meadow Cottages where we stayed. The cove was right across the street from the cottages. We stayed in the 2 bedroom ranch (Pic #7). Isn't the little working Post Office cute?

Pictures 17 thru 107 were taken in Acadia National Park. Notice pictures # 50 & 51. They were taken at the top of Cadillac Mountain which is in the park. The people in those 2 pictures were aprox. 15 feet away from the camera lens and we could hardly see them the fog was so dense.


Sunday:
Pictures 108 thru 163 were taken when we drove along the coastal roads of Mt Desert Island.

Pictures 164 thru 199 were taken from in front of the Bar Harbor Inn which is located in downtown Bar Harbor.

Pictures 200 thru 217 were taken along Rte3 on our way to have supper and then back to our Salisbury Cove cabin.

2. My husband and I went on a cruise last fall from NYC to Nova Scotia Canada

with stops along the way including Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park. I was totally amazed at the beauty of it all and we both hope to return there someday for an extended period of time. The cruise was lovely but the stopover TOO short.

12. Yes, loved it! TX has the stunning Hill Country, but Acadia is hard to beat!

I saw Acadia & Bar Harbor in the full bloom of autumn - wow - doesn't begin to describe it.
I could have spent days and days there.

Maybe my husband and will take a second honeymoon come fall, without the in-laws. People say fall is beautiful there.

Great pics. I like the foggy days too.

Even though my wife works just a few hundred meters from the Park boundary, we still very much enjoy visiting. There is always something new to see and the weather seems to change the whole look of the place. Our favorite time is in the Fall when the leaves are in full color and the cool nights drive the moisture out of the air, so that the view from the mountain tops is spectacular.

Once schools are in session, the Tourists leave for home. After Columbus Day, is the best time with another visitor peak when the Leaf Peepers show. Most of the Park roads are closed in Winter, but for the hardy souls that like to Hike, it's a Winter paradise.

29. I just told my husband what you said about after Columbus Day...

for Leaf peeping. Do you think that Columbus Day weekend itself would be colorful enough? On the net it said that Peak Leaf Color was around the 20th of Oct. last year. Do you think the aprox 2 week difference will matter a whole lot if we came up on Columbus Day weekend? It is better for us when we can take the long holiday weekend.

30. My advice is to check the website of the Bangor TV stations

they keep a report around that time as to the progression of the Fall colors. The leaves begin to turn in the Northern part of the State and work toward the Coast. The Time will vary from Year to Year, depending on the weather.
There aren't as many places open that time of year but finding accommodations is no problem and the rates are much lower.

You will still have a great time, as long as the weather is nice. No need for reservations, so wait and see. No point in spending two foggy weekends in a row.
Flash vacations can be fun.

Visited Acadia many years ago, and photos I took were among my favorites, rocks at seaside. Had kept them for display, but sold house (and husb) so they're gone now. Good to see yours.

24. We were there in 1989 and stayed at a campground at Mount Desert Narrows

whose name I no longer remember. I do remember paying 25 cents to get seven minutes worth of a shower in the shower house.

Bar Harbor is very beautiful. We decided to see a movie at the newly restored art deco theatre. The only thing playing was HONEY, I SHRUNK THE KIDS!

Arcadia National Park is well worth the visit with the huge granite rocks and the small granite pebble beaches. We did a three hour tour of the islands on a three masted schooner. Normally it took the whole three hours to sail around the islands. The day we took the tour, the wind was high and we went around those islands several time. Despite the wind, the mist on the islands was thick. The water was freezing, thus the brisk breeze blowing off the water was very cold. I was wishing for my (Florida) heavy winter clothing during that sail.

We joke in Florida the the state bird is a mosquito, but the ones there were large enough to carry off a small puppy...

I'd love to go again. I just need to remember winter clothes and a gallon of mosquito repellant.

On edit: The sun was way over the horizon at 5:00 AM and you could still read outside without artificial light at 9:00 at 9:00 PM...

26. Acadia is a fantastic place! I went 10 years in a row as a kid

...and went for the first time in 20 years on labor day weekend a couple years back.

I love Acadia absolutely...have been to...let's see if I can remember just for fun...the following US national parks:

Acadia ME, Shenandoah VA, Smoky Mountains NC/TN, Everglades FL, mammoth cave KY, hot springs AR, voyageurs MN, Theodore Roosevelt ND, badlands SD, Big Bend TX, Guadalupe TX, Carlsbad Caverns NM, Rocky Mountain CO, Mesa Verde CO, Yellowstone WY/MT/ID, Grand Teton WY, Glacier MT, Arches UT, Canyonlands UT, Capitol Reef UT, Bryce Canyon UT, Zion UT, Grand Canyon AZ, Petrified Forest AZ, Saguaro AZ, Great Basin NV, Mt Ranier WA, Olympics WA, Crater Lake OR, Redwood CA, Lassen Volcanic CA, Yosemite CA, Sequoia CA, Kings Canyon CA, Death Valley CA, Joshua Tree CA, Haleakala HI, Hawaii Volcanoes HI...and a bunch of other National Monuments which are amazing as well. Most I only spent a day or two in, but Acadia I know the most.

Happy togive advice to anyone as the National Parks of the US are my favorite thing!!! I have yet to go to Alaska where I will one day see so much more!

27. I love Maine!!!!

Never been to Bar Harbor or Acadia, but I have been to Portland. I was there with a group some years back and we took the ferry across Casco Bay to Peaks Island for a clambake. It was so much fun...



another trip you might want to take...

the Kancamagus Highway in NH. It goes through the White Mountains. The scenery is spectacular. Mount Washington is awesome.
