A page in honor of "Little Heart", the kitten killed in VA
This story has me so upset, I cannot stop thinking about it:

http://ourcats1961.webs.com/memorials/little_heart.html

Why does all this pain, hurt, and suffering go on and on? This little cat approached some kids, probably for affection or loneliness, and got beaten, thrown, and almost stabbed to death, and he died from his injuries later.

4. Until the states and counties decide to prosecute the people responsible
for animal abuse, this will continue. It is a proven fact that animal abusers are or will become human abusers. By stopping animal abuse they could most likely stop some future human abuse. I shake my head and wonder when these officials might get this. Common sense goes a long way!

7. Oh, this is so sad! I just read the story yesterday, and it seemed like he was on the mend.
I wish that evil kid would get the punishment he deserved rather than a slap on the wrist. And as others have noted, animal abusers often become people abusers. This is well-known about serial killers for example.

8. He's a sick kid...instead of punishment he needs therapy.
Ok, punishment and therapy...but locking him up with a bunch of kids who are already abusive probably will just make him worse.

Poor kitty.

10. I know I sound like a liberal here
:)

But I do wonder - how does a 12-year-old get to be to the point where s/he wields a knife, smashes living things against hard objects, etc?

So sad, all around. I just cried and cried over this cat. This story has touched my heart beyond belief.

12. sounding like a liberal?
Isn't that against DU rules?

But really, violence against living things is kinda common for kids. Kids kill many bugs, and perhaps rodents and snakes. Some people may even consider stray cats to be a nuisance animal, similar to a skunk, possum, or woodchuck. I know that I, as defender of squirrels, will run them away from my propoerty.

I think some 12 year old kids are already hunting, but usually people will be sentimental towards pet animals like cats and dogs.

I remember once when there was a muskrat or something like that at a church and some of the kids started throwing rocks at it, before I put the kibosh on that. Maybe it needed to be induced to leave, or even killed, but there was no good reason to torment it. These kids were probably all younger than ten.

23. Some punishment ARE therapy.
Not beatings, etc...but it may well be that this kid needs a firm lesson in the fact that actions have consequences. He is very probably going to be charged with felony animal abuse, and that's a start. He also is obviously in desperate need of psychiatric care...but people should understand that the success rate for such therapies with juvenile animal abusers is low. Furthermore, there is a chilling statistical link to progressively worse behaviors...like assault, rape, and homicide. At the very least, this little creep needs to be closely monitored by the authorities...probably for the rest of his life.

On a much better note, we have the wonderful example of the boy who tried to defend Little Heart. Jamarea Mills. He went after the perp, despite being three years younger and smaller, knocked a knife out of his hand (!), and did his best to save the kitten. He wants to become a Veterinarian, and has received offers of assistance it reaching that goal. :)

A socio/psychopath, then he can't be fixed. You just have to keep the sad monsters away from the public.

That was my thought too, when I read this. People who show such cruelty towards animals are also those who dont shy away from doing similar stuff to humans.

RIP Kitty :(

9. the name Little Heart makes me think of Little Fighter
although youtube apparently does not have a decent video, the sound is good here

Too bad, in the first story of this incident, I was sorta promised a happy ending.

As the book "If I had one wish" says "Our world is not kind to strangers. Heck, we aren't even kind to the people we love." To say nothing of other animals.

Sadly, a lot of localities probably just don't have the resources to properly enforce laws concerning animal cruelty. :(
