thanks to cell phones. The damages seem to be in Springfield, West Springfield, and Westfield, from what I hear.

10. I grew up there and live about 25 miles to the west...
Edited on Wed Jun-01-11 05:33 PM by pipi_k
We were watching Channel 22 when the tornado developed and was shown on live TV crossing the river into Springfield.

The South End of Springfield looks like a war zone. There's a gas leak reported. No reports yet of any injuries.

Although there's scattered damage, really major damage seems to be limited to the South End, though, right now.

PS...the National Weather Service is having to keep issuing new watches and warnings for severe thunderstorms and tornado watches are in effect till 8 PM.

This is totally unprecedented...

Edited to clarify, so there are no more posts telling me I'm wrong about tornadoes in New England...

I meant to say that it's unprecedented to have a tornado of this magnitude causing this much damage in the City of Springfield.

11. Not in New England, it's not.
We had a tornado watch in Northern Vermont last week and many years ago I was in a friend's house when a tornado ripped through and destroyed his sugarbush.

38. I meant it's unprecedented in the city of Springfield...
Edited on Wed Jun-01-11 05:36 PM by pipi_k
and the weather guys said it was unprecedented to actually see one develop on live TV. Around these parts, anyway.

There was a major tornado in 1953, but it was in West Springfield. Across the river from Springfield, which is a whole separate city.

Major tornado in the City of Springfield...unprecedented.

41. No. That's not what I say...
It's unprecedented for the Springfield area.

Large city. Middle of the state. In a river valley. Unprecedented for this much damage from a tornado for this city.

I'm well aware of the fact that we've had quite a few tornadoes in this state.

42. Not entirely true.
There was a tornado in Windsor Locks a few years ago. And there was a massive tornado in Worcester in '53 -- middle of the state -- that killed almost 100 people.

Edited on Wed Jun-01-11 05:45 PM by pipi_k
Windsor Locks and Worcester are NOT Springfield.

Tornadoes in Springfield, MA are unprecedented.

PS...Tornado in Windsor Locks was 1978 or thereabouts

Worcester is East of the Connecticut River, out near Boston. It's not in the middle of the state.

She was hiding in the bathtub with two quilts on top of her when I got there. She said the house shook a lot, but no damage. We've got a small place near Sturbridge, too, which also survived unscathed. What a crazy evening that was!
