There is nothing festive about MEMORIAL Day.

1. I agree, but...
Times are very tough for so many today...

People need a reason to smile, to look back at our history, to thank the veterans.

Just my 2 cents...

2. Okay, we'll wear sack cloth and ashes while getting together with family
My GF and FiL served in WWII. My husband and uncle served in VietNam (my dad was in the NG at the time, however, his day job was cop, mostly investigator), and our nephew is currently in the USMC. All of the aforementioned knew service members who died, they just happened to survive. Yet, per your message, instead of putting a burger on the grill and toasting those who died and remembering them with love and humor, we'll close flagellate ourselves instead. I'm sure that's what THEY would've wanted us to do.

4. +1. I have a family full of vets, both long gone and living.
When we get together, they remember the ones who aren't there--and no holiday is needed.
