Danged if I know!
Okay, it's the middle of the night and I figured it would be safe to post this. It was sent by a friend who's staying with her son in the hospital where he's having surgery on a leg. She got bored just sitting in the waiting room so she got some exercise by walking in the halls. When her coffee caught up with her she found a restroom and was a bit startled by this unusual piece, so she took a pic with her phone and sent it to a bunch of us to ask if any of us could explain the rather odd configuration. Only thing I could come up with was that it was designed to accomodate Rush's butt pimple, but I'm thinking there's probably a real explanation out there someplace. Anybody?

3. I think you're onto something there
Looks to me like it's designed to accomodate a large ass (such as Rush). If those ridges weren't there, there may not be enough support for the seat.

Unless the elongated size of the bowl is an optical illusion from the angle or camera or something.

4. Just a guess, but...
after looking at all sorts of handicapped toilet arrangements and finding nothing like this, I'm gonna guess that this is just to stop you from falling into the bowl if the seat cracks.

(Lawsuits about falling into the bowel are not unheard of, curiously enough.)

5. I think it's a specialty toilet to be ADA compliant. The extra protruberances
on the side could be so that when a toilet seat riser is positioned there, it will be more stable both fore and aft as well as laterally - keeps the riser from sliding around. Risers are often used to ease transfer from a wheel chair to toilet, or to make it easier for someone with leg/knee/hip issues.

That's my guess.

9. +1
Either that, or justification for the $3,000 toilet seats.

6. My First Impression Is
That a bowl could be positioned in the middle to collect fluids or solids for those who are unable to do so themselves.

8. Agreed.
Looks like it was built to handle bedpans at various locations.
