Good Lord!
The Lordstown (Ohio) GM plant is back up and running at full capacity, making the Chevy Cruze.

The UAW workers are back at it. Union jobs.

We weer talking about this at supper tonight. Obama has to get a fair bit of the credit, here. I admit to my own skepticism. Not for wanting GM to die. Quite the contrary. I didn't want to see it killed.

The future of the US's American owned auto industry is still a little shaky, but this is a very solid sign.

I would also note that the repubicans can't claim very much credit here at all. As it should be.

7. Impala, Bel Air, and Malibu are close to, if not actually, iconic American car names.
Beretta, Corsica, not so much.

11. If American Car companies allow foreign companies to lead technology - not good
I remember back in the 70s when the Big3 shot themselves in the foot by constantly making oversized gas-guzzling boat-size cars when the Japanese were making smaller and more fuel efficient. Sure they had some comeback with the Minivan and then the SUV but once again when the gas prices went up, it was the US-brand cars that were hurt the most.

Thing is this - the future will be about safe cars that get great gas mileage. If we can work on making these mini-vans and SUVs with 40mpg gas mileage, we can once again rule the car market. But until then - cars like the Chevy Cruze and Ford Fit are making US competitive again.

12. But their most profitable cars are the SUVs and guzzlers. Not Aveos and Cruzes.

14. that's true, which is why Americans need to work on their technology
Back when I was a temp, I spent a few days at a company that made hydrogen cells. They had a Ford Explorer and a Lincoln Town Car both powered by that technology. It works but it's still to expensive. But once we can find a way to mass produce this technology the price will come down and can be made affordable in these oversize cars.

16. Well, they need to change that.
Apparently they need a new approach to building smaller, more fuel efficient cars.

18. The technology is out there to put fuel efficient engines that have enough power...
to drive an oversized minivan or SUV.

To be honest, if the US Car Manufactorers can put a 40mpg Escalade or Dakota out there, the cars would sell faster than hotcakes.

To be honest it's not the size that is offensive with these cars, it's the fact that they get such rotten gas mileage.

21. Yes. I would love a 40 mpg
pick up. The only one I can remember is the VW Rabbit diesel based small pick up. I downsized my fishing boat to a 14 footer so the wife's mini-van will pull it. But the mini van only gets 28 mpg highway without a boat behind it.

10. My nephew just bought a Chevy Cruze - he says it's a great car
From what I've read it's a great small car and gets really good gas mileage. Chevrolet should be proud and so should the UAW Union members who helped build these cars!

13. I was shocked to drive into Youngstown last week on Rt 11 and spot
a newly built steel mill -

V&M Star - and they're expanding

I'm pretty sure they're non-union, but it's a start.

The center of Youngstown has some dilapidated housing, but other parts look good and there's a lot of activity in the surrounding area.

The Republicans can't claim anything in that regard (not even Romney).
