MSNBC’s Ed Schultz Calls Radio Host Laura Ingraham A ‘Right Wing Slut’

MSNBC host Ed Schultz is known for his hyperbolic attacks on Republicans but it looks like he may have crossed the line on his show yesterday by labeling Laura Ingraham a "right wing slut."

"President Obama is going to be visiting Joplin, Mo., on Sunday but you know what they're talking about, like this right-wing slut, what's her name?, Laura Ingraham?" he said on his radio show. "Yeah, she's a talk slut. You see, she was, back in the day, praising President Reagan when he was drinking a beer overseas. But now that Obama's doing it, they're working him over."

The epithet against conservative radio host Ingraham, which was first flagged by The Daily Caller, is quickly making the rounds online. TPM reached out to representatives for MSNBC and Ed Schultz for comment but did not immediately get a response. A spokesman for Ingraham told TPM she had no comment at this time.

This isn't the first time Schultz has gotten into trouble for bashing the right. Earlier this year he apologized for calling Republicans "bastards" during his TV show. Given the even greater severity of his remarks on Tuesday, it seems likely an apology -- at the very least -- will follow soon.

Barring violations of the law, it's up to their employers whether or not they are sanctioned for this or that remark. If MSNBC chooses punish Schultz, that's their business, just as its Rush's employer (not sure who that is . . . EIB or something?) who gets to decide when and if he has crossed the line.

I think the nature of the outfits might play a role here. I remember when Rush came onto the scene he was marketed as a 'shock jock.' He talks about politics, but essentially he's selling entertainment. MSNBC is different since they style themselves as a real news organization and thus have higher standards.

32. When you think about it, the term bastard has origins which border on sexist as well

just because the stigma of being a bastard is more an emphasis on the stigma of being an unmarried woman who gets pregnant, while there's less stigma on an unmarried man getting a woman pregnant. But bastard's origin has luckily kind of gone by the wayside and now it just means "bad person". And I have a lot less problem using that to describe Republicans than "slut", although I've been calling them "corporate whores" for years. Am I a bastard for doing that?

No, I don't like it either, and I don't use it, I can't remember ever having used it. I don't want to say that I haven't, but I don't remember ever doing it.

I think he stepped in it a little bit on this one... but really, the apology he owes is more to society/women in general than to the person he was talking about specifically.
