4. Actually Bedford is closer to Ft Worth than Dallas
Edited on Tue May-24-11 08:31 PM by tammywammy
Just west of DFW airport. Golf ball at least sized hail there as well. I'm just barely to the south of this passing cell, I think the next one will hit me.

Lots of wind, kinda freaky outside right now.

edited to add: They're saying up to softball sized hail. Euless is to the east of Bedford, right up next to the airport.

Q: What are the characteristics of a "wedge" tornado?

National Severe Storms Lab.
Wedge tornado near Shamrock, Texas, May 16, 1977.

A: The Storm Prediction Center's Frequently Asked Questions about tornadoes Web site describes "wedge" tornadoes as those that appear to be at least as wide as they are tall. This slang term is used by storm observers to describe tornado shape and appearance between the ground and the base of the thunderstorm cloud. Since cloud base in a tornadic thunderstorm is about one or two thousand feet, that would make a wedge tornado at least a quarter- to a half-mile wide, capable of destruction over a wide area. But, while wedge tornadoes can be, and many times are, ferocious, SPC cautions that tornado size says nothing about strength.

"Some very large tornadoes over a quarter-mile wide have produced only weak damage of F0 to F1" on the Fujita tornado damage scale, SPC asserts. The Fujita Scale ranks tornadoes by the damage they produce on an increasing scale from F0 to F5.
