Ballmer: Windows 8 Coming In 2012
TOKYO -- Microsoft's Windows 8 operating system will ship in 2012, company CEO Steve Ballmer said Monday at the Microsoft Developer Forum in Japan.

Additionally, Windows Phone 7 will roll out an update with 500 new features, Ballmer said.

"As we progress through the year, you ought to expect to hear a lot about Windows 8," he said. "Windows 8 slates, tablets, PCs, a variety of different form factors."

Ballmer also said the Internet Explorer web browser would be more integrated with Windows 8 and would stand ahead of its competitors.

1. " Internet Explorer web browser would be more integrated with Windows 8"
Somehow I remember that IE being integrated with Windows got them in trouble ?

If so, not too smart of Ballmer and MS.

6. United States v. Microsoft (1998)
"The issue central to the case was whether Microsoft was allowed to bundle its flagship Internet Explorer (IE) web browser software with its Microsoft Windows operating system. Bundling them together is alleged to have been responsible for Microsoft's victory in the browser wars as every Windows user had a copy of Internet Explorer."

2. Windows 8 is...meh...
If you already have Windows 7, there's no real compelling reason to upgrade to 8. It's not a revolutionary upgrade like 95 was from 3.1, or how XP was from Windows 9X.

5. Hey, remember how they were supposed to have an RDBMS-based filesystem in Win2K?
Funny how that one never seems to make the cut; they should just license couchdb from Apache at this point.

4. They won't. They'll keep adding shit and removing it 2 releases later.
Over and over and over again until you die.

However, free operating system software like Ubuntu or (my favorite) Simply Mepis is a great alternative to Windows. My girlfriend uses a Simply Mepis LiveCD- she doesn't have to install anything, it all runs from ram. And she doesn't know Linux but she knows Firefox and she can do her Facebooking and Farmvilling, etc., even more smoothly than on Windows.

Facebook is of the devil, IMO, but that's a discussion for a different thread.

7. Unfortunately
we sell a product based on Windows. We had to migrate to Windows 7 64 bit. Thankfully, the work for me (app developer) was minimal, but the driver writer had to make changes. The app interfaces to other devices with drivers, that had to be updated. It is time consuming until it is all done.

And I can't stand the file security crap introduced in Windows 7. Thankfully, I can continue to develop under XP, having made the changes necessary for Windows 7 64 - mostly to do with 64-bit handling in a few places.
