Sea Shepherd Peter Hammarstedt demonstrates how to conduct yourself if taken into custody
Besides the obvious of remaining silent because everything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law. In the video below notice how Peter doesn't even answer to the statement "the least you can do is to at least acknowledge that I was in the room here". Notice Peter chose not to respond even to that? There's a good reason why. Because if he had responded to what appears to merely be an innocent request would have meant Peter acknowledged the RCMP's authority over him. That is the only reason why the Mounty asked Peter this. By remaining silent Peter refused to acknowledge the RCMP's authority over him.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-4PPjladbsg

When Peter was arrested (in 2008) when the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) boarded the Sea Shepherd ship Farley Mowat in international waters. Peter, along with Captain Alex Cornelissen of the Netherlands, was charged with the "crime" of breaking the seal protection regulations by approaching, witnessing, and documenting the killing of a seal.

In Canada, it is a crime to witness or document the killing of a seal by a licensed seal killer.

Peter and Alex were each interrogated for four and a half hours.

And during that time, Peter and Alex said absolutely nothing in accordance to the rule: Nobody talks, everybody walks. They also refused to sign anything in accordance to the rule, Nobody signs, everything is fine.

Peter and Alex were unable to attend their trial last month in Nova Scotia because they had been previously deported and banned for life from entering the country. As a result, the trial went ahead without them, and their bail will most likely be forfeited.

By banning the two crew members from the country, the Canadian government was able to avoid the embarrassment of a legitimate trial with a defense. The sentence of deportation for life was given to Alex and Peter a year before the trial. We have included in the video a couple of the more humorous moments from the interrogation of Peter Hammarstedt. And remember, Peter and Alex each sat through four and a half hours of this comedy until the Mounties finally threw in the towel.

I'm especially amused by the Mounties comparing the documentation of the seal slaughter with Muslim terrorism.

In viewing this, please keep in mind that a Mounty need not have more than a tenth grade education to qualify to be a member of the RCMP. Another interesting factoid about the Mounties is that Disney owns their image. Every time a Mounty uniform appears on television or in a movie, Disney gets a cut of the appearance fees.

In this video, Peter Hammarstedt demonstrates the perfect response to interrogation. He simply said and did nothing.

3. The RCMP are just a bunch of Corporate Security guards waiting for their next donut break.

Up here if you go to the RCMP after graduating with a
Criminology degree it means you were two dumb or fat
to make the grade in your local police department.

Plus they are notorious for the abuse and murder of
aboriginal people.

5. Another childhood image smashed to f'ing bits
I grew up watching Yukon King with Sgt Preston of the Yukon, and Dudley Do Right, and the Mounties in the Canadian Bacon movie. You just crushed all that. :o

After this, Beaver Cleaver doing a Mel Gibson-like drunken melt-down couldn't shock me.

10. That's terrible. Pepper sprayed a small crowd with a little baby being the closest one.
What kind of person does that? That is just so wrong and to top it off there was no reason to pepper spray anyway.

Thinks for the link Monk06.

Peace,
Xicano

12. Nice broad brush smear.
The RCMP has its problems, but like any large organization there are good and bad. Mostly good. Your characterization is bullshit.

16. I guess the Neil Stonechild case was just an isolated incident then.

The RCMP have a bad relationship with natives that goes way
back and the Sechelt vid speaks for itself. Got a family
member in the RCMP? Too bad if you do. I still think they
are pigs and should be disbanded. Natives can form their
own police forces. They don't need to be pushed around by
a bunch of white boys from Saskatchewan.

17. Whatever. BTW, Neil Stonechild was in the custody of the Saskatoon Police, not the RCMP.
But don't let facts get in the way of a good rant.

18. The Saskatoon Police and the RCMP represent a distinction without a difference
Edited on Wed Jan-05-11 06:47 PM by Monk06
Anyway here is another case where the RCMP were "careless'
with a native prisoner who was found frozen to death after
being taken into custody by the RCMP.

http://wiinimkiikaa.wordpress.com/2009/01/13/saskatchewan-native-teen-escapes-cop-car-freezes-to-death/

and another with a discussion of the RCMP policy of not picking up natives who are drunk and
in danger of freezing to death because of the cost of gas to return them home

http://www.canada.com/saskatoonstarphoenix/news/story.html?id=3b387d8c-2dc1-43c2-9414-ef7b27e078a2

Here is a quote from the article re the RCMP policy change that is being used to justify abandoning natives
to die of exposure,

"A statement of facts filed with the court earlier this month stated that until recently, the RCMP abided by a 1997 Saskatchewan Justice policy that decreed "police are responsible for getting the person back home."

The practice was halted in the north last fall after a memo was circulated by Prince Albert Staff Sgt. Jerry Barkhouse, who referred to the cost of the transportation and said the practice was contrary to the RCMP's air division operating license. Barkhouse, who is now retired, also said the practice "deprives commercial carriers of business.""

No comment about the Sechelt incident? Or are you OK with
babies being pepper sprayed by the RCMP and their boss going
on camera to say they acted properly.
