This has been subjected to the usual treatment here at DU...

We always come out in the same place with topics like this...

are you so badly misinformed that you think folks here have voted for that?

why don't you read the article that you linked?

unrecommend strongly.

10. so you've decided all San Franciscans are crazy because something's going to be voted on?
possibly voted down in a coming election?

but we're all crazy because someone managed to get these things on the ballot.

whatever. :eyes:

25. Well things don't make it onto the ballot because they have majority support
which is what you've implied.

and so you didn't literally call us crazy --so we're supposed to believe that when you ask what's in the water here --that this means we ARE NOT crazy?

hey you made the post. if you can't take legitimate criticism of your careless post, don't post at all.

quit acting mortified that someone actually criticized a post you put out there for discussion --a post that was not well thought out.

Then there's the silt and farming runoff that comes into the Bay out of the Delta.

7. San Franciscans HAVE NOT voted on this yet
before casting aspersions on everybody here, how about letting them actually speak for themselves rather than deciding what everybody thinks based on some signatures for a ballot initiative or the support of one member of the Board of Supervisors.

:wtf:

really.

6. Ethics and reason
Taken to logical extremes - if FGM on minors is unacceptable, why isn't Male GM? If all GM on minors is unacceptable, isn't circumcision GM? This may be where SF feels it has to go to legally ban FGM by Somali immigrants within their city limits.

Which I am wholeheartedly in favor of.

So, logically, if you want to be circumcized, or have your clitoris excised, fine, but YOU make that decision, not your parents.

22. What do you do with Muslims and Jews then?
I know you don't believe it, but to them it would be a "free exercise" First Amendment issue. I'm not arguing the merits here, just pointing to a real problem with carrying this out and asking how this would come down, in your opinion...

like the niqab in france. i guarantee it will become a religious freedom issue.

i dread the day we see the ACLU defending FGM on free speech grounds.

31. I really don't think the ACLU will defend FGM on free speech or any other grounds.
Ain't gonna happen.

The burqa in France is one thing. There is no ACLU in France. The ACLU and the religious freedom issue with circumcision will be another. I think they will argue "apples and oranges" as it applies to female, male circumcision. Just my guess...

Edited on Fri May-20-11 06:43 PM by maxsolomon
because they're not - i'm circumsized and i'm not traumatized, and i don't consider it mutilation either.

but can you see that some people might draw the line between mutilation and social custom in a different place than you? because they do - muslims in e. africa certainly do.

PS see posts 19 & 24 below - that's what i'm talking about.

And I really cannot understand how a parent can acquiesce to it.

But, I won't vote for it. I do believe that activist did not do enough ground work to educate the citizens of San Francisco about penile mutilation.

Specifically, Michela Alioto-Pier.

In regards to ballot initiatives, only 46,000 signatures are required to get on the ballot, One tenth of registered voters.
