The thing that bothers me the most about the Schwartzenegger story
This was when he was running to get rid of Gray Davis for Governor. Gray Davis had screwed up the state so bad and we needed Arnold to "fix" it. And he "fixed" it... real good.

But, I find it hard to believe that no one knew about this story? Not anyone in the media. Not Maria, his wife. No one. They reported numerous affairs but it didn't seem to matter to the voters. They were looking to put California on the right path. Would they have voted for Arnold if they knew he had a child by his maid?

It seems to me that the voters were manipulated by the press if they knew about this story and did not report it. California did not get better under Arnold. It got worse. Gray Davis was doing a good job under the circumstances, with the oil companies, etc. But, I guess we will never know the truth?

1. "I told you so."
I live in Calif. I have said that over and over to those idiots who thought that Arnold would do a great job and, thus, voted to replace Davis with him.

Sheesh...it was soooooooo obvious to me. It would have been nice, however, if the press had revealed the kind of home life he pushed on his wife and children.

15. I always wondered if the "recall" would have succeeded if they didn't put the
poisonous vote for the "replacement" governor on the same ballot ...

How many would have shown up for just a "recall" vote?

What would have happened if a non-governor won the majority of the votes, but the recall vote failed???

3. nothing about this story bothers me
This story plays out 100 times a day. Why is it hard to believe no one knew? Do you think he was leaving press conferences to go bounce Junior on his knee while spare mommy gave him hummers in the back of his Hummers?

that she would allow an "in-house" sexual partner for hubby. She's had to put up with loads of crap from this asshole for years. But, puleeze!

Not under the same roof where she and her children live!

NO WAY.

5. Nonsense.
Arnold did a good job of hiding it, with the consent/help of the mother of the child.

7. Davis proposed raising fees on vehicle registrations, that was all
it took in those days to recall him & elect arnold. Arnold snaked Issa, who had orchestrated the recall for his own benefit. I doubt that even this scandal would have stopped arnold at that time.

21. Registration fees. It had nothing to do with holding Enron accountable.
Oh the fees were the hook, but the Enron fiasco was at the bottom of the recall. Arnold let the whole thing slide right on by. Davis was a threat and the Enron crooks took him down.

Well, that's my take on it anyway.

36. That's how I remember it too...
And as I recall, when the Enron thing broke, I was saying... Davis was right... Davis was right and he was railroaded... the whole deal was seriously screwed. No wonder Democrats don't want to hold anyone accountable.

9. Many things started to come out when he ran
Edited on Wed May-18-11 08:58 AM by NV Whino
But they were squelched... by the GOP. The voters were manipulated by the GOP who in turn manipulated the press. Gray Davis was destroyed by the Enron fiasco. Our attorney General at the time was on the verge of getting a decent settlement from Enron (energy company, by the way, not oil) when Arnie stepped in and settled for pennies on the dollar, throwing CA deeper in debt. California had a surplus before Enron gummed up the works.

In other words, the GOP wanted to bring CA to its knees and Arnie was the tool. He had to be perceived as the fair-haired boy, not the philandering jerk he really was.

10. Some of this DID come out
A woman reported harassment by Arnold. Arnold responded by hiring a private investigator to stalk the accuser. Story ended there.

I suspect the media knew and was either complicit or was intimidated into silence.

35. Word is they had a bunch of affairs and gropping stories
newspapers ran with the groping angle (as sexual assault is illegal while cheating on wife isn't). Maria's support "who wouldn't want to be misses..." killed the story and once a story loses its legs they lose interest.

But I don't think anyone is shocked to find out Arnold cheated on her because jeepers that story has been out forever. I can't figure out why it is even news accept confirmed celebrity dirt is always juicier than unconfirmed celebrity dirt :)

12. Most of the electorate do not base their vote on logic, ethics, or even...
personal interest. They vote on beliefs and emotions. Their beliefs drive them to answer the appeal of a partiular candidate.

Neither Gray Dave, Arnie, nor Brown will solve the mess here in California. It would require both sides to come together, negotiate in good faith, and compromise for the benefit of the people.

Finally, what Arnold, Edwards, Gringrich, and anyone else do with their pecker isn't my bussiness as long as they don't legislate with it.

17. The problem with wealthy and powerful men's peckers
Is that that they often stick them in inappropriate places. Case is point Dominique Strauss-Kahn. And a man who would fuck around on his wife, would fuck around on the voters. If you are running for public office, and asking me for my vote, EVERYTHING you do is my business.

24. My guess is that the sperminator knew she'd find out
When you're both multimillionaires, it isn't that hard hiding a few thousands every month. However, in a divorce, the accountants will discover all manner of embarrassing things. Arnold probably figured if he told her, maybe she'd keep it private. She probably did somewhat, but I'm also guessing that she told her closest friends and at least one of them let the story out. The thing is, both Arnold and Maria are incredibly media savvy--just because either one of them says something, doesn't mean they "went public with it", it is just as likely they are playing the media game and getting in front of the story.

Who knows what Maria knew and when she knew it? It seems most likely she didn't know about the boy until she sought a divorce (or possibly discovering the boy brought about the divorce)...either way, it would have been long after the last election.

25. SF Chron's alleged "political reporters" take on this
Edited on Wed May-18-11 03:53 PM by mulsh
"The reason, according to those operatives - who agreed to talk on the condition they not be named - was that the affair was just too close to home.

Unlike former presidential contender John Edwards, who fathered a child by a woman working on his campaign, Schwarzenegger's affair with a household helper was never witnessed by disgruntled aides who might have reason to drop a dime.

Neither does there appear to have been any public or campaign money involved in whatever it took to keep Schwarzenegger's paramour out of the news.
