"The Toppling: How the Media Created the Iconic Fall of Saddam’s Statue"
The Toppling: How the Media Created the Iconic Fall of Saddam’s Statue

Peter Maass, in collaboration with ProPublica and The New Yorker, reveals the exact story behind the toppling of the statue of Saddam Hussein at Firdos Square in Baghdad on April 9, 2003. His story shows how the American media exaggerated the importance and context of the toppling, conveying an erroneous sense of victory in a war that was just beginning.

2. I can't do video on my computer, but I'll still say, "Well, DUH!"
Anyone who was actually paying attention back then already knew it was a completely phony set-up piece of bullshit.

There were plenty of photos of the true scenario at the time -- and it was so obviously a faked "event" that only the gullible and the true believers failed to notice how they were being manipulated by a totally clumsy bit of extremely crude psyops -- aided and abetted, of course, by our compliant media.

Bah! It STILL pisses me off. And now all these years later someone comes along with a supposed big reveal of what anyone with a lick of critical thinking knew all along? It's absolutely maddening!

4. Phil Ochs called it years ago
Up and down the coast, the generals drink a toast, the wheel is spinning
And the cowards and the whores are peeking through the doors to see who's winning
But the traitors will pretend that it's getting near the end, when it's beginning

Guess what the media's role in the above lyric is?
