Rupert Murdoch just wet his pants (part 2)
No, no, the evil Murdoch didn't really wet his pants...but the Guardian is now running a story that Murdoch's newspapers hacked into the messages of John Prescott, the Deputy Prime Minister, 42 times!!!! That would be like FOX news (also owned by Murdoch) hacking into Joe Biden's phone.

Even better? The only reason the Deputy Prime Minister wasn't told of the hacking was because the bought-and-paid for police commissioner at the time covered up everything...and then was hired by Murdoch to be a high paid writer instead of a policeman.

Me thinketh that Murdoch and his minions have gone to far. Oh...and wasn't the head of FOX working for Murdoch in London while all of this was going on? How long until we start seeing proof the same thing was happening here. I mean, the British phone systems are pretty much the same here. If you know how to hack in London, you know how to hack in Washington.

Phone hacking: 45 messages from John Prescott were intercepted, court hears @ http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2011/may/12/phone-hacking-messages-prescott

A snippet: The private investigator at the centre of the phone-hacking affair intercepted 45 voicemail messages from the then deputy prime minister John Prescott and emailed them to the News of the World, the high court has heard. Lord Prescott's lawyers told the court that he had been the victim of "an unfortunate history of misinformation" by the Metropolitan police, who had told him repeatedly that he was not a victim of hacking. But the court heard that the investigator Glenn Mulcaire had targeted Prescott by listening to messages which he left on the phone of his chief of staff, Joan Hammell.

2. :0) I have been working this story from one end of DU to the other
Because it has the potential to pull down the conservative government of the UK, it has the potential to due massive damage to Rupert Murdoch, and, once it surfaces that Murdoch's papers/FOX have been doing it here, it could be the undoing of FOX news.

It is one of the biggest and most important stories of the past couple of years because of the deep, deep implications.

43. FOX / Murdoch is a subversive organized arm of propaganda. It's lies and
promotion of corporate astroturf groups has undermined our nation's confidence in it's ability to solve our problems in a humane, rational, ethical and intelligent way. Destroying our country by undermining truth in media should not be condoned by the FCC or acceptable by law as a first amendment right.

They certainly don't want their colleague, Rupert baby, to go down, so they cover up the truth. For shame CBS, NBC, ABC & MSNBC. The thing I don't understand is how Lawrence O'Donnell, Rachel Maddow or Ed Schultz haven't picked up on this? Or are they just not allowed to report it???

14. I am sure they are doing it here. But here, if they hacked into
the VP's phones, that would be considered a breach of national security and would be very serious. Since their pal Bush was president for most of the last decade, I doubt they bothered with his phones, but I would not be surprised to find they were doing it to Democrats in Congress eg.

Thanks for keeping up with this story, Snoutport. I saw the first stories on the Guardian site a while ago and wasn't sure if anything would come of them. I look for posts to keep up with it though, and thanks again for doing the work.

Btw, Wikileaks supposedly has stuff on Fox also. I wonder if it has anything to do with this? Remember that was the material that Assange claimed he would use as 'insurance' should anything happen to him. Would love to know what it is.

24. Doubt that will happen...but he might have to sell off some papers...
he has settled several cases out of court for close to a million bucks. There could be 6000 people who could sue FROM JUST THIS ONE INVESTIGATOR...(they employed quite a few more!!) Some are saying if they go to court they probably would cost them $100,000 a whack...so no matter what...this is gonna cost them a LOT of money...and that is going to HURT big time. THen, one by one, many of his employees will be picked off and sent to jail.

So, a major loss of talent and money all at once might leave his news empire pretty shaky...and if a liberal govt. gets in you can bet they will go after him with new laws and controls.

56. Here in the UK
There are a few more (non Murdoch) newspapers that simply haven't reported on the subject in any detail. The belief here is that those newspapers have all been involved in their own hacking scandals that they don't want publicising.

I would suspect too that in the US, if no one is reporting on phone hacking then they may not want anyone looking at their own activities too much.

73. Its not Murdoch though or atleast
it hasnt been proven that he approved and or authorize it and even if thats the case its not espionage since it

#1 It took place in another country
#2 No evidence has been shown that it was down at the behast of a foreign power or to aid a foreign power

Which is kind of sad because if it was espionage and it could be proven Murdoch authorized and or approved of it that could well mean the breakup of his entire media empire.

76. Industrial espionage is not unusual, but hacking government e-mail,
is declaring that the government is their enemy. Espionage can be seen as an act of war.

Murdoch may not be directly involved, but he bears some responsible for the actions of his employees.

74. I'm surprised that Randi Rhodes isn't covering this story. Has Thom Hartmann?
I can understand why Rachel wouldn't, maybe Keith will?

It is crazy that it's not getting more attention.

If it wasn't for you, snoutpout, I wouldn't even know about this.
