Anti-drug balloon goes down in Sierra Vista

SIERRA VISTA - The City of Sierra Vista has confirmed that the Aerostat, a helium-filled blimp-like balloon that usually floats near Fort Huachuca to monitor radar, broke loose from its tether and broke apart.

The Sierra Vista Fire Department confirms that debris have scattered around town, with chunks of the balloon landing in neighboring yards and streets. No injuries have been reported.

The Aerostat is part of an anti-drug effort coordinated between the Air Force and the Drug Enforcement Agency, using radar equipment to detect smugglers and aircraft bringing drugs into Arizona.

News 4 has a crew en route to the scene - Stay tuned to News 4 Tucson this evening for the full story.

4. "Anything that flies will come down, eventually."
Sleeker drug blimp to float above southern Arizona

<snip>

Sierra Vista dentist Donald C. Simpson said he still believes putting the aerostat in the foothills of the eastern slope of the Huachuca Mountains, where he and many others live, is a bad idea.

"I think it's a stupid location," he said. "Why put it here instead of other places on post, or when you've got a county with thousands of acres of empty land? Anything that flies will come down, eventually."

Real estate agent Fizzie Stachel said she believed concerns about the aerostat were baseless in the late 1980s and are baseless now.

"Nobody is opposed to it anymore. We've all gotten pretty used to seeing it. We don't even notice it anymore," she said.
