I Am Sick Of Seeing This Post on Facebook...

"I mourn the loss of thousands of precious lives, but I will not rejoice in the death of one, not even an enemy.
Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that."
- Martin Luther King Jr.

They are exploiting MLK.

I have been responding with the following..

.."I would like to ask you but do you really think Osama was going to let himself be taken in to custody ALIVE. The USA gave him what he wanted that being seen as a martyr amongst his people. I have no issues with what his demise was...Osama all but destroyed the economy here in the USA...He almost destroyed my dreams and the money I had invested in my career. I ask would you feel the same way if the last occupant of the White House would have followed through with his threats in the early days after 9/11.. I'm certain that MLK would not be a critic of this action tonight... Osama once had love and he rejected it and tonight our country has had a much needed victory. The WHOLE team that carried this out did an awesome job and I say CONGRATULATIONS President Obama and the Navy Seals."

I have shut down my FB page for the day... I can't read anymore PITTY Osam post.

17. he said everything but the first sentence
First, the messy details, quickly. Sometime Monday parts or all of the following "quote" flew around Twitter and Facebook, attributed to King:

I will mourn the loss of thousands of precious lives, but I will not rejoice in the death of one, not even an enemy. Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that.

Then someone Googled the first sentence, and found King never said it. The Atlantic's Megan McArdle went up with a "gotcha" post, accusing folks with reservations about both bin Laden's killing and its celebration with fabricating evidence that King would have agreed with them. But then it came out that, while King didn't say the first sentence, he had in fact made the other two statements, on Page 53 of his book "Strength to Love." And it turned out nobody "fabricated" anything: A 24-year-old teacher named Jessica Dovey wrote her own thoughts, sans quote marks, before the King quote, and posted it on Facebook, but as the post was cut and pasted and abbreviated in countless ways, King's words and Dovey's got jumbled. No fabrication; no harm, no foul.

8. I agree with those posts.
Killing someone out of necessity, to stop him from committing more acts of terrorism is one thing. We're all indebted to the American Armed Forces and Intelligence for that.

To jump for joy and chant victory slogans over the death of someone is quite something else. It was sad when the middle easterners rejoiced in the death of Americans, it is sad when Americans exult in the death of Osama.

20. I'm not sure that everyone is promoting pity. They're just saying try not to hate.
That's good advice, because hate obscures things that may be useful to understand.

It is possible to be kind of like a judge; see someone as fully and honestly as possible, all of their crimes, and not have a personal emotion about them, or just very little.

23. That is apparently misquoted as well
The quote certainly sounds like something Twain would have written or said: "I've never wished a man dead, but I have read some obituaries with great pleasure."

Matt Blum at Wired was among those who caught the misquote. A similar version actually came from Clarence Darrow, an American lawyer most known for his role in the Scopes Monkey Trial.

His quote: "I have never killed any one, but I have read some obituary notices with great satisfaction."

The quote may have gotten confused with another that's long been attributed to Twain: "I didn't attend the funeral, but I sent a nice letter saying I approved of it."

Screengrab from Sean Bonner. But this is not a joke! In a company blog post today, Yahoo reported that two-thirds of people searching for "Who is Osama Bin Laden?" today were teenagers. Yes, that's right, a non-insignificant number of teenagers in America do not know who Osama bin Laden is. Yahoo blog post re searches on Who is this dead guy Osama bin Laden?

IS HE IN A BAND???
