Welcome to the Ask the Administrators forum. (PLEASE READ BEFORE YOU POST.)
Welcome to the Ask the Administrators forum, which is also known as ATA. The purpose of this forum is to provide a place where members can ask questions and get a response from the DU Administrators.

How This Forum Works

The Ask the Administrators forum works like most other forums here on DU, but with some important differences.
  • Anyone can ask a question in this forum. To do so, just click the "Post" icon at the top of the forum. Fill out the form just as you would elsewhere on DU and click the "Submit" button to post.

  • Your question will not appear immediately. A placeholder for your thread will appear in the ATA forum, to show that your question has been successfully submitted. But the text of your question will not be publicly available until it is reviewed and answered by a DU administrator. Neither you nor anyone else will be able to post replies in your thread until an administrator has posted a response.

  • Eventually a DU administrator will review your question and post a response. At that point, the text of your question and the text of the administrator's response will both be made public.

  • The only people who may post replies in a thread are the author of the original question, the DU administrators, and the DU moderators. All other individuals are automatically blocked from posting by our software. If you are the author of the question that started the thread, you can post a response in the thread after an administrator has responded. When you post a reply, it will appear in the thread immediately.
We wish that it were not necessary to institute these restrictions on this forum. But in the past we learned that some people have a tendency to post in the Ask the Administrators forum when they are very angry, and as a result do not always choose their words carefully. The DU Administrators are not online all the time, and we believe it is better if particularly unfair or hurtful accusations posted in this forum are not permitted to fester out in the open without a response.

Helpful Hints

The DU Admins are not obligated to answer every single question that is asked in this forum. Questions that are rude, contain threats, or call out other members are less likely to get answered than questions that are polite and assume good faith. With that in mind here are some tips to help you get your question answered.

Be polite. If you do so, you greatly increase your chances of getting a positive response from the administrators. That's just common sense.

Assume good faith. The DU moderators and administrators are not perfect. But we try very hard to be fair and want to do the right thing. If you ask your question in good faith, we promise to give you a good faith answer.

Be patient. The administrators are not online all the time, and sometimes it takes a while for us to respond. Do not get upset if it takes a few hours, or even a day or two, for an administrator to reply to your message. We have lives, too.

No personal attacks or call-outs. Do not use the Ask the Administrators forum to complain about a specific member or members of Democratic Underground. If you have a concern about a specific person, please click the alert link on one of their posts to let the moderators know.

Where appropriate, click "Alert" instead. Many issues can be resolved by clicking the "Alert" link on the appropriate post. Please do not post in the Ask the Administrators forum if you can click "Alert" instead. Generally, the "Alert" link should be used for specific instances of rule-breaking or disruption, but the Ask the Administrators forum should be used for questions about DU policy.
