Colin Powell on CNN Thurs: There might be more GOP candidates
He told Piers Morgan that he didn't think all the candidates had come forward yet for consideration.

Morgan immediately jumped on that asking if he (Powell) was considering it.

No. But there might be additional candidates.

Morgan asked for more detail, but Powell would not speculate.

Tantalizing hint, there.

1. If there is another candidate out there
Edited on Fri Nov-11-11 02:11 PM by hughee99
I wouldn't be shocked if they already consulted with Powell for possible support and as a potential running mate.

9. Yes, but he has "foreign policy experience",
he's not already disliked by moderates, and he hasn't spent the last couple of years making an ass of himself.

17. Sorry but it's too soon for another Bush--most people still blame junior for the mess we're in
so it won't happen. The Bushies are hoping for 2016.

23. I wish it were true....
but Jeb could win. Having the Bush name would be a liability but wouldn't make it impossible to win. He was my prediction to be the Republican nominee but I'm not sure anymore. It seems too late to jump into the race. I would be surprised if there are any additional candidates.

24. Saddest man in America
I often think that Jeb may be the saddest guy in America. Do you suppose a day goes by where he doesn't lay in bed thinking of how he could have been president if not for his stupid "it never should have been George anyway!" brother? I seriously think that if Dubya hadn't stolen the presidency in 2000, Jeb would have been a serious contender. And while I don't care for the guy's politics, he had a slight chance of keeping the looney Republicans a little less looney.

Instead, we got George. And Jeb got screwed. Note: I don't feel sorry for him, but he really did get screwed by the whole Dubya thing.

Which brings me to my point: Jeb can't win. Not now. I agree that people haven't forgotten his brother yet. The campaign commercials about how this country doesn't need another Bush ... well the commercials write themselves.

8. I can see it, but what about filing deadlines?
Every one of the dozens of GOP frontrunners soars right after announcing, the right the upstarts, they get the positive press, then crash and burn. So I can see a "just in time" strategy for them now. Find a more serious, viable candidate but don't roll him/her out until the last possible minute. Let the usual GOP media pump up the new entry, without enough time for the crash n' burn to take place. Hit 'em while they're high.

But that still brings up the matter of actually getting on the state ballots. A nationwide write-in seems extremely unlikely. Like I said, I can see a late entry as a real strategy, but don't see how it is workable given our current election laws.

26. I don't believe Iowa caucuses even have ballots.

The secret to Iowa is usually organization and spending time in Iowa talking with the people. But in this case "pick someone at random" might seem like the best choice to a majority of Republican Iowa caucus goers.

41. A candidate can declare and run for the nomination even if they miss a few early filing deadlines.
It has happened in the past. Jerry Brown was a late filer for the Dem nomination in 1976 and missed some early deadlines for instance.

12. Why
"Colin Powell on CNN Thurs: There might be more GOP candidates"

...doesn't Powell and everyone else pushing this meme come right out and say it: The current crop of GOP candidates are crap.

Does anyone really think that implying that another GOP candidate will emerger does anything but create doubt about the Mitt, Herman, Newt, Perry and the rest?

What will the wingnuts do?

27. This is not far fetched. A late entry for a party starving for a decent candidate
would avoid scrutiny and take advantage of the fevered puppy love that the gop seems to exhibit toward each of its candidates in turn. The new candidate might time it so that the love fest peaks right before election, avoiding the otherwise inevitable wake up call from reality. A Palin could do it. A Christie could do it. Jeb Bush could do it.

The general election might be rough for him/her, but a shortcut to the party nomination seems possible.

29. They can't win with typical tactics...so they resort to caging, changing electoral
vote policies (from winner take all to partial allocation in purple and dem states), undercutting traditional dem donors such as unions, redistricting, citizens united, media distortion of issues, congressional obstructionism, under-equipping voting location in dem areas, election fraud (at a minimum, the potential is there), running fake democrats (Wisconsin and elsewhere)...and possibly by gimmicks such as late candidate entry or by fluffing up an unknown, like Palin in 2008.

They have to take chances...they will lose on the issues and will lose on a popular vote. The only route is confusion, risk, fevered idolatry, vote supression, deception, polarization, fear.

(they've used another tactic, a whole different kind of thread...more indirect....buying of dem leaders)
