1. Massachusetts residents voted for the idiot in the first place
Edited on Thu Oct-06-11 11:44 AM by Island Blue
so maybe they're not as smart as you think. Of course they're much more enlightened than those of us down here in Hickville, USA but whatever. Just in case you're not aware, because obviously you're not, the residents of North Carolina have already elected female senators (from both parties) and we currently have a female governor. Texas has also had female senator and governor. Remind me of how many Massachusetts has had?

15. We ran a shitty candidate who turned the voters off with her presumptiousness.
I'm not saying that as a personal attack against Coakley. I'm sure she is a good person. But she approached her campaign the wrong way and assumed that the whole thing was gonna be handed to her. That was a huge error in judgement on her part. It was unfortunate. But it was also clear why that might turn voters off.

Elizabeth Warren, on the other hand, seems to be a natural at campaigning. And she has a lot humility. And people in Mass who know her seem to think very highly of her.

2. Something Scottie should remember:
A vain man finds it wise to speak good or ill of himself; a modest man does not talk of himself.

8. Don't count on his daughters saying anything to him
They did an attack ad against Martha Coakley that was so nasty that the ad stated that the type of person Martha Coakley is is the reason woman stay away from politics.

7. She raised the subject as an issue of judgment
He followed up with a snotty, personal attack on a woman's physical appearance.

Two totally different things.

11. Agreed. Scott Brown used the issue of photo shoot in his campaign to talk about
raising money to pay for school. He talked about it openly in his run for office. His comment was a cheap shot.

19. She simply made a witty reply to a question speaking of his modeling
that spoke of the FACT that she did not do that - with no reference at all to Brown.

In essence, inadvertently, the Boston Herald, which either did not vet the questions or approved it, provided a way to bring Brown's past up. Brown needed to respond lightly - not attacking Warren - saying it was part of his past, seemed a good idea at the time, and was something everyone already knew of. In 2010, he said he was not embarrassed by it - I wonder how true that is.

16. No, she absolutely did not raise the subject first. The person asking her the question raised it.
This was in a Senate debate, a student asked her how she paid for college and mentioned that Scott Brown has posed nude. THEN Warren responded, as a very inoffensive joke, that she didn't take her clothes off. There was nothing mean spirited about it and she didn't initiate the mention of the issue herself at all.

Brown's response on the other hand is mean spirited because it implies that it would be awful to see Elizabeth naked. He may not have even meant it as mean as it comes across, but it still not the kind of comment that plays well.

18. No she didn't - the question refered to Brown's source of income
She simply said she kept her clothes on.

13. Sounds like he was ready for it -- and painted himself
in a sympathetic light. Golly, I just did what I had to do so I could pay for college, not easy coming from a broken home, sniff, sniff, sniff don't you feel for me? :puke:

17. What an idiot
One thing the Democrats should get out is that the QUESTION referred to Brown's Cosmo photo, it was NOT gratuitously brought up. The college student questioner was perhaps inappropriate, but Warren was not. Brown's response was completely tone deaf. He is a jerk.

As pathetic as the Warren comment, is his challenge at the end that sounds like he is challenging her to a triathlon or a race. That has NOTHING to do with being Senator and brings back his obnoxious behavior at his first Pan Mass bike race where he made various comments that Kerry could maybe keep up with him for a mile or so etc. Kerry's comments were all on the charity and when asked about his personal efford, his comment was that he was grateful he was able to ride it and hoped to continue doing so. Turns out the Globe investigated afterward - Kerry had a far faster time AND more importantly raised over $100,000 to Brown's $4,000. The same thing happened this year.

20. Read the Boston Globe article

Note that they:

- Made it clear that the QUESTION referred to Brown
- Pointed out he went to Tufts and Boston College - 2 exclusive, prestigious, private, expensive schools.

They then quoted enough of his "poor, poor Scottie" tale to make him annoying.

He was a college graduate - he had a scholarship to undergraduate school - likely leaving him in less debt that over half the kids now. He could have taken loans for law school or gotten a job - it was a good economy - and saved the money. He didn't - and likely had a pretty good time modeling and living a life including studio 54 and marrying a model. Nothing to feel sorry about. It is his past and it is something he has to accept.

21. How is this a referendum on his candidacy?
He said something sexist...that's about it. I don't hold the Massachusetts citizens to any high standards considering they chose him as Senator.

23. Not a referendum, but likely a huge mistake
With help from the media, Brown has been portrayed as a "nice guy", with a "warm personality", who "connects to people"

Brown is NOT in sync with MA on the issues, so the ONLY way for him to win is because people like him enough (and or dislike his opponent enough) that enough vote for him anyway.

This shows a pretty unattractive guy - no matter how he looks on the surface.
