Yes, Obama is not very popular right now, but it's better to be unpopular than to be hated. Ohio and Florida have traditionally been the key swing states for presidential elections. Currently, the governors of Ohio and FLorida are down right hated right now in these states. Gov. Kasich is facing referendums on his policies and Gov. Rick Scott is doing more damage to the Republican brand in Florida than the Dems could ever do on their best day.
The 2012 Republican nominee will have to campaign with these guys in these states, and more importantly, the nominee shares the same political ideology with these governors, gut government services and attack the unions. This ideology is wildly unpopular in these states.
Obama may be unpopular, but these governors are hated. So, all Obama would have to do is remind the voters that the Republican nominee will be a larger, nastier version of what they're already experiencing in their states.
