Gallup: Obama not losing liberals or Dems (also another poll on primary matchups)

Gallup: Obama not losing liberals or Dems

By Greg Sargent

If there ever were a time when you’d think Obama would lose support from his base, it would be now, with high profile lefty activists and pundits hammering the President daily over the emerging debt deal.

But Gallup took a poll from July 25th through July 31st and found him holding steady with both liberals and Dems:

The website Politico carried a story on Monday morning headlined: “Debt deal complicates liberals’ support.”

Yet the data show that Obama’s support from his liberal base remains as high relative to his overall average as it has throughout his term. Specifically, liberals’ approval of Obama last week was 72%, 30 points higher than his overall approval rating of 42%. By comparison, liberals’ approval has averaged about 28 points higher than his overall average so far in the Obama administration.

Obama’s job approval last week was 77% among Democrats
, 37% among independents, and 12% among Republicans. This overall pattern of partisan difference is not substantially changed from the average such differences over the last 2 ½ years. Democrats have on average given Obama an approval rating 33 points higher than his overall rating, and last week their approval rating was 35 points higher.

The problem with this kind of polling is that it doesn’t gauge the base’s enthusiasm, as opposed to generic approval, and enthusiasm is a key metric for determining whether base voters will turn out, volunteer, give money, and so on. And as Digby notes, CNN’s new poll finds a majority of liberals thinks Dems gave up too much in the debt deal, and media figures are beinning to entertain the idea that depressed base enthusiasm could end up being a real problem for Obama’s reelection campaign.

more

Yeah, enthusiasm is key, and there are a lot of forces working overtime to depress Democratic voters.

Now that primary data: Sanders approval rating bests Leahy

<...>

Sens. Patrick Leahy and Bernard Sanders each boast approval ratings in excess of 60 percent, according Public Policy Polling, a decade-old polling-for-hire outfit that does contract work for politicians, businesses and organizations.

The Raleigh, N.C.-based polling firm won't unveil the full results of its Vermont poll until tomorrow. But the firm has teased the release by posting some interesting highlights via Twitter.

Sanders' in-state approval ratings make him the third most popular senator in the nation — behind only Daniel Inouye of Hawaii and John Barrasso of Wyoming — according to the poll.

Despite his popularity though, Sanders trails Barack Obama by 19 points in a hypothetical presidential primary — among Green Mountain voters, no less. Former Gov. Howard Dean, meanwhile, lags 37 points behind Obama among Vermont voters in a hypothetical primary.

35. They do blame him for the mess but they are beginning to say
what are you doing about it. It is now yours.

This is what I am picking up as I surf the news stations.

47. These polls make me laugh. Consider who is running against him.
if there was anyone credible he would be in a world of hurt. Given that daffy duck is the possible repug candidate they are of course saying they will vote for him.

13. there would be no goal of affecting Obama's election chances
My reason for wanting to protest is solely to express myself, not to change anyone's opinion of Obama. Same goes for anything i say on DU.

32. Does that really make sense to you ...
You are "expressing yourself" on a political bulletin board; but you're not trying to influence the opinions of others? Yeah, right! That's like saying "I'm on stage singing; but I'm not trying to entertain anyone."

How do you explain that? And even in this poll, he's down by about 11 points among so-called Liberals.

10. Wow, Bernie is only 19 points behind the President without
even spending any money on a campaign or anywhere near the kind of name recognition of many other possible contenders!

That gap could be closed easily with some national exposure and campaign ads, speeches etc.

Run Bernie! He could switch parties and run in the primaries.

As for the poll, looks to me like the numbers for Obama have dropped about 11 points among so-called Liberals.

33. (wiping away tears) I know. I understand how you feel
And yes, it is embarrassing. It is MORTIFYING.

But josh, you have to understand. So many of the president's critics here think they are so damn much smarter than EVERYBODY. It is simply hilarious to see that so many folks who rock themselves to sleep at night convinced of their own intellectual superiority really aren't bright or informed. At all.

I think I can laugh a bit more because I'm one of those independents that everyone is so concerned about/loves to blame. But I understand that any Democrat reading this site has to hang their head in shame and has probably done so for a few years now.

16. I'm not sure who is being polled and how their being polled
to come up with these numbers but what I do know is that the anger at Obama from the left is growing. Have anyone listen to liberal talk radio lately? I listen to quite a bit including black talk radio and I would say at least 50% of the callers have become very critical, very negative and frustrated with Obama. So if Obama look at this Gallup poll and think every thing is peachy on the left and he continue on the same rightward path he's on, he's going to have a rude awakening come 2012.

I can't breathe!   Just when I thought the "Kucinich wins!!one1!" poll from a few years (that some posters are still touting as proof of... something) was the crown jewel of the Know Nothing Tiara.

And I say this as someone who thinks that Bernie Sanders' is the bees knees! This is just too damn funny.
