Boehner's new bill requires Balanced Budget Amendment be approved before 2nd debt ceiling increase
Practically Delusional
David Kurtz | July 29, 2011, 11:08AM

Rep. John Boehner (R-OH) Just minutes after President Obama urged the parties to come together and avert this default crisis, things are actually going backwards in the House. And in pretty incredible fashion.

To secure enough votes from his own members for his plan, Speaker Boehner is amending it to basically turn it into Cut, Cap, and Balance Lite.

Here's the key new provision that is apparently going to win enough GOP votes to pass the bill:

The debt ceiling would be raised immediately but not by enough to get the government through next year. To get the second debt ceiling increase, House Republicans want a balanced budget constitutional amendment to pass both chambers first and be referred to the states.

Never going to happen, but that's where we are. It makes you wonder if there's any compromise plan that can get through this House. That's why, even though my gut says there's no way the U.S. is stupid enough to default, I still can't see a clear, viable way out of this.

2. More games
I am so sick of this man.

He's approaching this like it's some video game that can be reset when the going gets rough. I've reached a point when I can't even watch the news anymore it makes me so angry.

3. There aren't even enough votes to pass a Balanced Budget Amendment in the House.

8. An amendment requires a 2/3 vote.
Of both houses. That's 287 votes.

4. This was clearly the sticking point yesterday
It's interesting to consider the psychology of it, in any case.

You probably have some who think that the BBA will be a going concern. They were happy to send the CCB up to the Senate, and they thought that a BBA might really happen. When they saw Boehner took it out, they threw a tantrum. Hence, yesterday's events.

There are probably some more realistic ones who just want to put the Dem Senate and House on a NO vote for the BBA. These folks think people really care about that kind of shit, which is ludicrous.

Just remarkably incompetent and dumb all around.

...Reid is trying to get GOP votes for his Democratic plan."

And some complain that the Senator comes in "too late" to say that. Go figure.

6. A clear way would be for Obama and Congressional Dems to push a clean bill
"Set this political nonsense aside and just raise the ceiling and avert disaster. We can hash out the rest of it after that."

Simple, sane and keeps the long-range issues open for discussion
