Michele Bachmann officially leaves her church
Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann has long been a darling of conservative evangelicals, but shortly before announcing her White House bid, she officially quit a church she’d belonged to for years.

Bachmann, a Minnesota congresswoman, and her husband, Marcus, withdrew their membership from Salem Lutheran Church in Stillwater, Minnesota, last month, according to church officials.

5. Not in the least. They are in a breakaway, right-wing synod.
Obsessed with people being gay.

13. The communion thing is theological conservatism and not political.
However, I left the MoSyn for the ELCA which us NOT a conservative church body. WELS is between the two. No wonder she left if it was an ELCA church - definitely not conservative enough for her and her anti-gay hubby. I am thinking that the church is better for her absence.

9. The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America is still in the process of developing a social statement
directly related to homosexuality, yet they do call all Christians to respect all people, regardless of sexual orientation. The church will allow for the ordination of homosexuals to be ministers, but they are expected to abstain from homosexual sexual relationships.

I wonder if might be if the line drawn in the sand as it tends to undermine the Bachmann's bombastic position

11. She wasn't ELCA, which is relatively liberal.
She belonged to the Wisconsin Synod (WELS), which represents the lunatic fringe of Lutheran theology.

10. Wisconsin Evangelical LUtheran Synod
One of the most conservative of the LUtheran bodies in the USA.

Not only are women denied ordination to public ministry,
they are not allowed to serve on the governing body (church council)
nor are women allowed to teach in the church, except for small children.

They take literally the Bible, and no one is allowed to take the
Holy Communion except those who are members and agree with their
'pure doctrine.'

And if she's walking out on that, dollars to donuts she's
hooking up with something much more conservative...go figure.

She would be shocked, shocked I say, if she sat in the pews
in my congregation.. and heard what I have to say.

I can't figure out these theologically conservative,
bible literalists who deny women full personhood in the
faith community.. yet they see themselves in political leadership?
A teeny bit hypocritical?
