Two Black Role Models Done In By Hubris
What do you think of this article?

In the past few weeks, the two most famous and arguably most successful black men in America have taken a huge fall. It has become clear that both pro golfer Tiger Woods, just named Athlete of the Year by the Associated Press, and the American president, Barack Obama, the first black person to lead the country, suffer from a surfeit of hubris which has finally caught up with them. If both men somehow thought they were untouchable, they have been put to right. Both have crashed to earth and it may well be true that they can never recover their earlier status again.

While Woods' "indiscretions" affect only himself and his family, he has felt the sting of the media invasion and a permanent loss of privacy. His reputation as sport's good family guy is gone. For Barack Obama the honeymoon is really over, even those who wanted to give him a chance are getting tired of what is not getting done, what was promised and reneged on. There is disappointment enough in both of them.

It is tragic when an icon falls. When a black icon stumbles the tragedy seems doubly problematic. Mike Tyson, Magic Johnson, and Michael Jackson were all at the tops of their fields before revelations that made them less palatable as heroes and less of a role model for young black men. They have all been partially rehabilitated but not without a huge cost.

And now while the news if full of Tiger Woods' penchant for tawdry moments with women who can't hold a candle to the physical beauty of his wife, the information we get on Obama, while far less salacious, is even more disillusioning. The expectations of real change that had people in tears a little over a year have been so thoroughly dashed that too many of his supporters feel betrayed by their naivet; they feel, as I do, almost foolish for believing that the status quo could really be kicked out the door. Is it even possible for our national landscape to change? Can we really progress from a country of individuals all looking for their stake to a country that actually has the notion that a stake for everyone means more for all? Having worked for weeks and months for Obama, having written glowingly about his oratory skills and his ability to gather even the disenfranchised together, as well as capture that ephemeral youth vote, I stood at rallies and allowed myself that enormous surge of hope that connected me with the rest of the country. But what was our choice?

Even though many voted for Obama simply out of fury with the policies of the last eight years, there were more who truly put their faith in him that he could, with a majority vote and a majority in Congress, really get so many of the things done that the Democrats had been promising to do for years.

60. Hi Kahuna! This was actually a little experiment that the lovely SemiCharmed came up with
to see what people thought about this piece. SemiCharmed is a woman of color (Latina). We've already absolutely DESTROYED this piece in the African American Interest Group - http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.ph...

Needless to say, we're both really happy (and rather surprised) about the majority of the responses here in GD. Now THIS is what makes me proud of DU.

15. Asinine drivel with a preposterous premise but not necessarily racist
Disillusioned as I am with Obama I don't think there is any way you can compare his situation with Tiger Woods' fall from grace.

I think this is the work of a hack writer searching for an angle. The angle being that both men are part African American.

IMO Obama's situation is much more like Bill Clinton (minus the BJ's from interns) than Tiger Woods. Of course if we find out he has been getting BJ's from interns, it'll blow my premise completely.

But as crappy as this article is, it doesn't say or even imply that ALL black men have this moral flaw that brings them down like characters in a Greek tragedy.

If it did, it would be racist. As it is it is just a very poor piece of writing.

I have nothing but contempt for Tiger Woods. I still respect and admire Obama despite having a profound disagreement with his health care policy.

This is an obnoxious article whose only real purpose is to give voice to the prejudices of the ass who wrote it. She wants to see hubris in two men she sees as black, so she sees it.

One is a president, leading the most powerful country in the world. One can hit a golf ball well. Yeah, they're a lot alike.

64. Hey, if you agree with the article, explain away...
if you want to defend an article that tries to portray someone as a certain race to fit some preconcieved (negative) connotations of black athletes and "hubris", go ahead. If you can't explain it, then don't worry about chiming in. Your usual short responses betray the fact that you have nothing to back up your attacks, unless you call one liners a "discussion".

63. Lovely post. I'd like to hear more minority opnions here too. But too often, the few minority
voices here are drowned out by those raving against this administration and even condemning minorities who still support this President. Even worse are those who purport to be "concerned" about us but have no genuine concern for our communities.

Also, the current atmosphere has been so horrible towards the president that many minority voices no longer post here. Which is why the afrosphere and other blog sites devoted to people of color is really such a valuable tool right now for many minorities.

How do you know that they are role models for black Americans? Especially, Tiger Woods. It's racist for you to assume that. Was george bush and dick cheney role models for you? Following your logic, they're white. You're white. Ergo you want to be just like them.

68. I've never thought of Tiger Woods as a black anything
He's a talented and highly paid athlete who, like so many athletes and other types of prominent individuals who made it big while young and immature, turned out to have some serious personality flaws.

71. How do they compare a mans infidelity with another mans
problem reigning in Congress to get a health bill passed.

Absolute racism and mixing apples and oranges.

73. I do not believe the article had racist intentions.
However, is it racist? I would say yes.

Its racism comes from the poor analogies and use of logic. One must not write so carelessly; especially when discussing the tender issue of race.

Mashing Obama with Tiger Woods is a ridiculous move. There is no justification for it. However, should the poster be labeled a racist? Of course not. Everybody deserves another chance.

76. this is why woods has stayed in the limelight so long- to give the right the op
portunity to keep making these racist bullshit associations, and with the 1000 radio stations in the talk radio monopoly they have the perfect tool to use this kind of crap for that purpose.

this is typical limbaugh hannity savage shit and they can keep at it all day every day from the biggest stations in every state, protected by call screeners from criticism.
