Toles: Once and for all-ery
By Tom Toles
Are there any more ways to spin the bin Laden mission? People are working on it, but I think now all the major relevant facts and implications are pretty apparent. Osama bin Laden will not be planning or carrying out any more terrorist attacks, and that is that. There are legal and ethical questions about the mission, but nobody is going to spend a lot of energy trying to argue that bin Laden got a raw deal. But no sooner did his body bag hit the water than life’s complexity returned, or continued.

President Obama will no longer be subjected to the charge of being a dithering jello-like weakling appeaser, at least not for the next two weeks. Those who have been looking for any available line of argument about why Obama is by fate and definition a failed president will have to find something else, and will. The non-gelatinous Totalitarian Tyrant line is still available, as is The President Who Is Responsible For Bush’s Budget Decisions.

Meanwhile, there are still people out there who want to kill Americans and there always will be. Obama’s poll numbers are up but will go down again. Remember, Winston Churchill was voted out of office after World War II, thank you very much, Winston. Did we get closure? Until about lunchtime tomorrow.
